4041 Private William Acland of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Philip and Elizabeth Acland. Born in Bath  in 1846. Recruited at Exeter in 1894. Severely wounded at Elandslaagte 21 October 1899.

4712 Private Thomas Adams ("Tom") of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Albert and Catherine Adams. Born in Torquay in 1876. Secerely wounded at Elandslaagte 21 Oct 1899 at the age of 23.
 AGNEW, A
Private Arthur Agnew of the 1st Rifle Volunteers. Son of Samuel and Margaret Agnew. Samuel Agnew was a gun and rifle maker with a retail outlet in Exeter. Arthur Agnew was born in Exeter in the December Quarter of 1876. The Rifle Volunteers were part of the Devon Service Company which joined the Devonshire Regiment in Natal in 1900. Present at Exeter to receive his medal from Lord Roberts 9 September 1901.

24136 Trooper Edwin Rattenbury Algar of the 27th (Devonshire) Company, 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Son of Edwin and Virginia Algar of 26 Staddon Terrace, Plymouth. Born in Plymouth in the March Quarter of 1882. Previously employed by Messrs Hicks & Co, Wine & Spirit Merchants of Plymouth. Died of wounds received at Vlakfontein 4 June 1901 at the age of 19.

Trooper Owen Thomas Algar of the Royal Devon Imperial Yeomanry. Son of Thomas and Mary Algar of  Diss, Norfolk. Born in Diss in the June Quarter of 1868. Volunteered in Plymouth and left for South Africa 6 February 1901.

24556 Trooper Arthur Watts Allen of the 27th (Devonshire) Company, 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Son of Joseph and Eliza Allen. Born in Bickleigh, nr. Plymouth in the June Quarter of 1879. Volunteered for service in South Africa. Awarded the DCM for gallantry.

Sergeant John Samuel Amner of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Annie Amner. Born in Ramsgate in the June Quarter of 1870; married to Lucy Elizabeth (née Hunt) who was living in St. James Rd., Bermondsey. Killed in action at Colenso 15 December 1899 at the age of 29. 10 years service at that date.

Trooper Alfred Edward Anderson of the Imperial Yeomanry. Son of Edward and Emelia Anderson of The Square, Chagford where Emilia was the District Nurse. Born in Aldershot in the June Quarter of 1879. Volunteered for South Africa and left for Aldershot 13 Jan 1902 at the age of 22. A tailor by trade.

Lance Corporal William Andrews of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Laura Andrews. Born in Colebrook (Crediton) in the March Quarter of 1876. Wounded at Elandslaagte 21 Oct 1899 at the age of 23.

6481 Private William Henry Anning of the 27th Coy, the 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Son of William and Mary Anning. Born in Kenton in the September Quarter of 1873. Volunteered and left for for service in South Africa January 1900.

4793 Private Reginald Anstey of the 1st Rifle Volunteers. Son of James and Jane Anstey. Born in Starcross in the March Quarter of 1880. The Rifle Volunteers were part of the Devon Service Company which joined the Devonshire Regiment in Natal in 1900. Slightly wounded at Lydenburg 8 September 1900.

Private Sydney Robert Henry Anstey of the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Henry and Henrietta Anstey. Born in Topsham in the March Quarter of 1880. Wrote home from the front.

Lance Corporal Richard Henry Arberry of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Henry and Nancy Arbery. His father was a Quartermaster Sergeant. Born in Stonehouse in the September Quarter of 1868. Taken prisoner  but released after the battle of Colenso.

24662 Bugler Arthur Ash of the 27th Company (Devonshire) 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Son of Thomas and Mary Ann Ash. Born in Buckfastleigh in the March Quarter of 1876. Volunteered for service in South Africa.

Bugler George Axworthy of the Volunteer Relief Company raised in Plymouth and attached to the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Jessie Axworthy. Born in Plymouth in 1879.

Sergant Major John Harry Ayles of the 7th Battalion, the Imperial Yeomanry. Son of Stephen and Elizabeth Ayles. Born in West Stour, Dorset, in 1868. Awarded the DCM for gallantry.

Corporal Edward Ayshford Aire of the Royal First Devon Yeomanry. Son of Thomas and Isobel Ayre. Born in Tiverton in the December Quarter of 1880. His departure for South Africa as a volunteer is recorded on a board in Exeter's Guildhall.

5167 Private Ernest Arthur Babb of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of George and Sarah Babb. Born in Taunton on the June Quarter of 1880. Severely wounded - action not yet known - in 1901 at the age of 21.
BADCOCK, C
6537 Trooper Charles Badcock of the 27th (Devonshire) Company, 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Son of  Lewis and Henrietta Badcock. Born in South Molton in the December Quarter of 1878. Volunteered for service in South Africa. Invalided home at the age of 21. Emigrated to Austrralia in that year.

Private John Charles G. Bailey of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Emma Bailey (his father was a private in the Royal Marines). Born in Stonehouse in the December Quarter of 1870. Reported by the War office to be dangerously ill with dysentery at Standerton 3 February 1901.

6584 Private Louis Pentyre Baker of the 27th Company, 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Son of Robert and Mary Ann Baker. Born in Littlehempston in the June Quarter of 1879. Volunteered for service in South Africa.

Sergeant Thomas Herbert Baldwin of the 2nd (Prince of Wales) Volunteer Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. A former Royal Marine Private who, as a reservist, volunteered to go to South Africa. Born in Stepney, London in 1863. Husband of Annie Elizabeth (née Preddey). Returned safely to High Street, Devonport 7 June 1901 aged 38.

Private William Bale of the 4th Volunteer Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Eliza Bale (widow). Born in Northam in the March Quarter of 1871. Returned safely to 7 Mole Cottages, South Molton June 1901.
BANFIELD, W
4719 Private William Banfield of the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Eliza Banfield. Born in Dalwood in the December Quarter of 1871 but brought up and enlisted in Axminster. "Dangerously wounded" 6 Jan 1900 at the age of 28 - died of his wounds 20 Feb 1900. 4½ years service at that date.

5173 Private William Henry Barkwill of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of James and Elizabeth Barkwill. Born in Bratton Clovelly in the December Quarter of 1879. Wounded in fighting between Feb 14 and Feb 27 1900 at the age of 20. Two years service to this date.

5661 Private Frederick Barnes of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment, formerly of the 3rd Devon Militia Reserve. Son of Humphrey and Mary Jane Barnes of Plymouth. Born in Stoke Damerel in the December Quarter of 1872. Died 27 February 1900 during the Siege of Ladysmith.

6609 Private Anthony Cornish T.Barrable of the 27th Company (Devonshire), 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Son of Daniel and Mary Barrable. Born near Lympstone in the June Quarter of 1877. Invalided home from South Africa and shows in the 1901 census back home with his parents and with no occupation.

Sergeant John Henry Bastin of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Cathering Bastin. Born in East Budleigh in the March Quarter of 1879. Wounded in action at Colenso 15 December 1899 at the age of 20.

Private William Henry Bastin of Tucker's Horse. Son of Benjamin and Sarah Bastin. Born in Budleigh Salterton in the September Quarter of 1869. Father gave interview to local press about son in South Africa.

Trooper George Batstone of the Devonshire Regiment. Taken prisoner at the Battle of Colenso 15 December 1899 and  released from Pretoria in June 1900 but had to  be hospitalised. Reservist.

Troop Sergeant Fred Luntley  Battershill of No. 1 Troop, the South African Light Horse. Born in 1861 in Dartmouth and husband of Sophie Battershill (née Warmington). Worked as a butcher in Dartmouth. Volunteered to go to South Africa.

Private James Bawden ("Jim") of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Alfred and Maria Bawden of North Molton and brother of Private John Bawden ("Jack"). Born in  North Molton in the March Quarter of 1870. Wrote a letter home which was published in the local press.

Returned home safely to 7 June 1901 to 1 Grosvenor Street, Plymouth aged 21. Present at Exeter to receive his medals from Lord Roberts 9 September 1901.

(Commissioned 1900). Nigel William Francis Baynes of the Gloucestershire Regiment. Served in the South African Campaign 1900 - 1900; held the Queen's medal and two clasps. Born in Torquay 21 March 1878. Killed in World War 1. Son of Walter and Amelia Baynes; husband of (1) Phoebe Morris; (2) Gladys Talbot.

Private William John Bazley of the 1st Volunteer Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Sarah Bazley. Born in Sandford in the March Quarter of 1878. Volunteered for service in South Africa and returned safely to Hope Cottage, Starcross, June 1901 at the age of 23.

2699 Private Alfred James Berry of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Thirza Berry. Born in Lynton in the June Quarter of 1869. Wounded in the Battle of Colenso 15 December 1899 at the age of 30. Eleven years service to this date.

4778 Private Arthur Robert Bevan of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of James and Frances Bevan. Born in Okehampton in the June Quarter of 1880. Died in June 1900 of wounds received at Ladysmith.

6482 Trooper Cecil Francis Bewes of the 7th Devon Imperial Yeomanry. Son of Frederick and Ellen Bewes. Captain Frederick Bewes was a JP and Adjutant of the 5th Devons. Born in Newton Abbot in the March Quarter of 1874. Wounded 22 December 1899 at the age of 25. Employed at Totnes as a bank clerk.

Private Arthur Bidgood of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Thomas and Fanny Bidgood and husband of Mary Ann (née Parsons) of Exeter. Born in Tiverton in the June Quarter of 1867. Present at the Battle of Elandslaagte and took part in the Relief of Ladysmith. Returned safely and can be found in the 1901 Census.

6563 Corporal Henry James Bird of the 27th Company (Devonshire) the Imperial Yeomanry. Son of Matthew and Louisa Bird of South Molton. Born in North Molton in 1873. Volunteered for service in South Africa. Selected to receive his medals from King Edward VII in person 31 August 1901.
BLATCHFORD, G 6538 George Bruce Blatchford of the 27th (Devonshire) Company, 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Son of George and Alice Blatchford. Born in Torrington in the March Quarter of 1883. Returned safely and appears in the 1901 census working as a saddler alongside his father.

Killed in action at Potgieter's Drift 5 - 7 February 1900 at the age of 28. 8 years service at that date. Reservist. Held the Indian medal and clasp.

21153 Corporal Robert Edward Bovey of the 27th (Devonshire) Company, 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Son of Robert and Emily Bovey. Born in 1871 at Timaru in New Zealand. Brought up in Littleham (Exmouth).
BOYD, G
4441 Sergeant George Boyd of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. As a result of his gallantry, Boyd was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant and moved to the East Yorkshire Regiment to begin a new life as an officer. Born in London, he was taken prisoner at Colenso and released the following June in Pretoria. He was mentioned in Earl Roberts' despatch dated 8 September 1901 and decorated with the DCM.

5289 Sergeant Owen Charles Bragge of the 7th Battalion, the Imperial Yeomanry. Son of the Reverend Charles Bragge and his wife Emily. Born in 1877 in Rodwell, Dorset. Volunteered to serve in South Africa. Awarded the DCM.

24564 Troooper Walter Foster Lithgow Braidwood of the 27th (Devonshire) Company, 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Son of Lithgow and Mary Ann Braidwood. Born in Brentford in the Decemebr Quarter of 1874. Volunteered for service in South Africa. Wounded at Vlakfontein 29 May 1901 at the age of 26.

Private Salathiel Braund of the 4th Volunteer Brigade, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Thomas and Charlotte Braund. Born in Bideford in the March Quarter of 1879. Returned safely June 7th 1901 to 3 Cross Street, Northam.

6539 Bugler Sidney J. Braund of the 27th (Devon) Company, the Imperial Yeomanry. Son of James and Rebecca Braund. Born in Parkham, Bideford in the March Quarter of 1878. Died of enteric fever 27 June 1900 at Pretoria at the age of 22. Sidney Braund had a twin sister called Leah.

7687 Trooper Henry Brayley of the 25th (Somerset) Company, 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Son of Henry and Mary Jane Brayley. Born in South Molton in  1875. Invalided home in 1901.

2015 Private Thomas Breadmore of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Henry and Lydia Breadmore. Born in Quarley, Hants in the Marach Quarter of 1866. Taken prisoner at Colenso and released from Pretoria in June 1900 at the age of 34. Reservist. Shown on the 1891 census living in the household of a Colonel as his servant - described as "Private - the Devonshire Regiment."

4915 Private Harry Bremford of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Nathaniel and Ellen Bremford - his father was a sergeant in the Royal Artillery based on the Isle of Wight in 1901. Born in Falmouth in 1879. Enlisted at Plymouth in September 1897. Wounded at Rietfontein 24 October 1899 - took part in the Battle of Colenso 15 December 1899 at the age of 20.

6540 Colour Sergeant Thomas John Bright of the 27th (Devonshire) Company, 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Son of William and Sarah Bright. Born in Briton Ferry, Neath, in 1878. Awarded the DCM for gallantry.

Private Richard Brooking of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of James and Ann Brooking. Born in Diptford in the June Quarter of 1874. Wounded in action at Potgieter's Drift 5 February 1900 at the age of 25. 9½ years service at that date.  Reservist.

Drummer William George Brown of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Mary Ann Brown (widow). Born in South Molton in 1877. Wounded in action 24 February 1900 at Ladysmith aged 23. 4 Years service at that date.

Private Arthur Bubear of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Thomas and Jane Bubear. Born in Crediton in the September Quarter of 1878. Wrote a letter home from the front which was published in the local press.

3210 Private Edwin Buckpitt of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Edwin and Emma Buckpitt. Born in Plymouth in the December Quarter of 1864. Wounded at Ladysmith 17 February 1900 at the age of 35.

Gunner Charles William Bugg of the Royal Garrison Artillery. Born in Tiverton in 1871. Husband of Alice (née Stevens). A reservist who was called up in  1899 and drafted to active service in Natal. He sailed for South Africa 3 February 1900. Returned home safely 18 April 1901.

Private Henry Venn Buzza of the 2nd (Prince of Wales) Volunteer Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Elizabeth Buzza and brother of Frederick Buzza to whose home he returned.. Born in the March Quarter of 1859 in Kenwyn, Cornwall. Returned safely to Picklecombe, Mount Edegecombe 7 June 1901 aged 42. Present at Exeter to receive his medal from Lord Roberts 9 September 1901.

24592 Lance Corporal Augustus E. Caldicott of the 27th (Devonshire) Company, 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Twin son of Augustus and Esther Caldicott (twin brother named James). Born in 1878 in Fairford, Glos. Volunteered for service in South Africa and returned safely. Is show in the 1901 census working as a house painter.

Private George Henry Candish of the 5th (Haytor) Volunteer Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Ellen Candish. Born in Kingsteignton in the December Quarter of 1875. Volunteered and returned home safely to Old Exeter Street, Chudleigh. Present at Exeter to receive his medals from Lord Roberts 9 September 1901.

6512 Private Herbert Philip Cara of the 27th (Devonshire) Company, 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Son of Stephen and Kate Cara. Born in Penzance in the March Quarter of 1875. Volunteered for service in South Africa.

Lieutenant Lewis Adolphus Carey of the 27th (Devonshire) Company, 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Born in Guernsey in the Channel Islands in 1870. Voluneetered for service in South Africa but was invalided home. He shows in the 1901 census living at Luppitt with his wife Mildred (née Rasch) and their young family.

2nd Lieutenant Henry James Lucius Cary of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Lucius Cary, Lord of the Manor of St. Marychurch, and his first wife Bertha (née Phillips). Only surviving son and heir. Born in Dover in January 1872. Died of Enteric at Standerton 2 January 1901 at the age of 29.

Private Henry Cavill  of the 1sr Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of James and Martha Cavill. Born in Heavitree, Exeter, in 1875. Wrote a letter home which was published in the local press.

Private William Chambers of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Sarah Chambers. Born in Burlescombe in the September Quarter of 1876. Wrote a letter home, which was published locally, describing his life as an officer's servant under war conditions.

6508 Lance Corporal Thomas Arthur Champernowne of the 27th Company (Devonshire), 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Son of the Rev. Richard Champernowne, Rector of Dartington and his wife Elizabeth. Born in Dartington in the June Quarter of 1868.

Born in Devonport, Plymouth in the September Quarter of 1869. Volunteered for service in South Africa and invalided home in 1901 at the age of 32.

Corporal Frederick Chudley of the Volunteer Composite Regiment. Son of James and Eliza Chudley of Newton St Cyres. Born in Newton St. Cyres in the June Quarter of 1876. Killed while on patrol 21 December 1900 at the age of 24.

Private Samuel George Clements of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Emma Clements. Born in Exeter, St. Thomas in the May Quarter of 1879. Died of dysentery at Ladysmith 24 December 1899 aged 20. Before  his death, he wrote a letter home which was published in the local press.

Harry Clift was a civilian volunteer from Exeter Port Office who joined the Royal Engineers' Telegraph Battalion. Son of George and Emily Clift. Born in Exeter in the December Quarter of 1873. His name appears on a board in Exeter's Guildhall.

6095 Private Frederick Hodge Cole of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Samuel and Mary Cole. Born in Ashprington in the December Quarter of 1880. Killed in action at Geluk 26 August 1900 aged 19. His name appears on the memorial plaque in Totnes Parish Church.

Private Henry William Coles ("Harry") of the Service Company of the Buffs, the East Kent Regiment. Son of William and Elizabeth Coles.  Harry was born in Woolwich, Kent in the June Quarter of 1872. His father William was born in Willand and became a Master Gunner. At the time of his son's enrollment, William was stationed at Sandgate Castle, Folkestone. There was a further connection with Devon through Albert Coles, Harry's brother , who was schoolmaster at Puddington and it was to him that Harry returned from South Africa 13 July 1901 at the age of 29.

6509 Private Arthur Edward Collins of the Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry. Son of James and Anne Collins. Born in Chagford in the September Quarter of 1878. Volunteered and left for South Africa in January 1900.

Private George Henry Collins of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Held the Queen's South Africa Medal showing Cape Colony 1901 and 1902 and the Transvaal Clasp. Left the Devonshire Regiment and settled in Maymyo as Assistant Station Master on the Burma Railway. Married an Anglo-Indian lady and had two daughters. Rejoined the Devonshire Regiment as a Corporal in WW1, going to France in 1916. Volunteered for the Royal Engineers "Special Brigade" . Belived killed in an accident in the UK in 1917. Buried in a war grave in Tiverton Cemetery.

The Rifle Volunteers were part of the Devon Service Company which joined the Devonshire Regiment in Natal in 1900. Travelled to South Africa on  the SS Greek.
