22629 Trooper Percy Charles Jago of the 27th (Devonshire) Company, 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomany. Son of John and Grace Jago. Born in Madron, Cornwall in 1873.

Private Francis James of the 1st Volunteer Brigade, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Francis and Elizabeth James. Born in Sandford in the December Quarter of 1875. Returned safely to England in June 1901.

Private Frederick John James of the 4th Volunteer Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Parents not yet confirmed. Born in Bideford in the June Quarter of 1876. Volunteered and returned safely June 7th 1901 to Barbican Road, Barnstaple. Present at Exeter to receive his medals from Lord Roberts 9 September 1901.

Trooper George Rendell Janes of the Imperial Yeomanry. Son of John and Elizabeth Janes. Born in Bridgetown, Totnes in the September Quarter of 1875. Volunteered for South Africa and left for Aldershot 13 January 1902 at the age of 26.

Private Joseph John Jeffery of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Mary Jane Jeffery (widow). Born in Moretonhampstead in the September Quarter of 1871. Wounded in action at Potgieter's Drift February 5 - 7 1900 at the age of 28. 10 years service at this date.
JOHNS, C 2730 Private Charles Johns of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Johna and Mary Johns of Cornwall. Born in St Germans in 1877. Died at Ladysmith 23 February 1900 after 11 years of service.

6560 Private Ronald Frederick Godolphin Johnson of the 27th (Devonshire) Company, 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Husband of Ada. Born in Torrington in the June Quarter of 1863. Private William Jones of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Husband of Emma (née Rowe). Believed to have been born in Holcombe Rogus in 1867. A Reservist who was ordered to the front 10 February 1900. Wrote a letter home to his wife which was publish in the local press - he was a postman at Uffculme and returned to that job at the end of the war.

3848 Private John Jordan of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of George and Elizabeth Jordan. Born in Littlehempston in 1877. Killed in action near Ladysmith 17 Feb 1900 at the age of 23. Reservist.

4792 Private John Josland or Joslin of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of George and Elizabeth Josland of Cheriton Bishop. Birth registered in Crediton in 1879 but born in Cheriton Bishop. Severely wounded at Elandslaagte 21 October 1899 aged 21. Enlisted in January 1897.

2758 Private Ernest Oliver Jouxson of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Oliver and Kate Jouxson. Born in Ilminster in the December Quarter of 1871. Wounded in action at Colenso 15 December 1899 at the age of 28. 11 years service at that date.

5604 Private Bertie Judge, Militia reservist in the 3rd Devonshire Regiment. Son of Sophia Gingell (formerly Judge) and step-father William Gingell. Born in Plymouth Stonehouse in 1878. Missing, believed to be a POW after the skirmish at Edenkop in the Transvaal 24th December 1900 at the age of 22.

Private Lionel J Keats of the 2nd Volunteer Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of James and Elizabeth Keats. Born in Plymouth in 1875. Left for South Africa from Plymouth 27 Feb 1901, joining the Volunteer Relief Company.

930 Private Samuel Keetch of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of James and Matilda Keetch. Born in East Stonehouse in the September Quarter of 1865. Wounded in the assault on Ladysmith 6 Jan 1900 at the age of 35. Sixteen years service at that date.

2006 Private Harry James Kelly of the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Mary Kelly (widow). Born in Exeter in the September Quarter of 1875. Taken prisoner at the Battle of Colenso 15 Dec 1899. Released from Pretoria June 1900. Reservist.

4908 Private William Kemp of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Thomas and Mary Kemp. Born in Torquay in the September Quarter of 1876. Wounded in action in the battle of Colenso 15 Dec 1899 at the age of 23.

3909 Private Walter John Kempe of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of the late Samuel and Ann Kempe of New Street, Bideford; husband of Florence Anne Berry (formerly Kempe) of 32 Irsha Street, Appledore. Born in Bideford in the June Quarter of 1875. Rejoined his regiment at the outbreak of WW1 and died in France 21st April 1915 aged 39.

6569 Shoeing Smith James Herbert King of the Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry. Son of Joshua and Mary King. Born in Bideford in the December Quarter of 1873.Volunteered and left for for service in South Africa January 1900. Wounded in action during fighting for the relief of Ladysmith between Feb 14 and Feb 27 1900 at the age of 27

Private John Kingdon of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Mary Ann Kingdon. Born in Bishopsnympton in 1880. Wrote a letter about the battle of Colenso which was published in a newspaper.

Private Lewis Edward Knight of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Lewis and Ann Knight, both of Devon and husband of Ellen (née Thornton). Born in Bristol 22 December 1874. The family returned to Exeter where Lewis jnr. became a baker's apprentice. Enlisted in the Devonshire Regiment 15 July 1893 at the age of 21 having previously served with the local Royal Artillery Volunteers. Served in India then in South Africa between 1899 and 1902. Held the South Africa medal with clasps for Ladysmith and Belfast; also the King's South Africa medal with clasps for 1901-1902.

Trooper Percival Richmond Knowles of the Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry. Son of Albert and Frances Knowles. Born in St Austell in the September Quarter of 1873 but later moved to Plymouth.  Left for South Africa Jan 1900.
LAFONE, W
Captain William Boutcher Lafone of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Alfred Lafone, MP and his wife Jane. Born at Hanworth Park, London in the March Quarter of 1861. Killed at Wagon Hill, Ladysmith 6 January 1900 while taking part in the charge of the Devonshire Regiment led by Colonel Park. Twice wounded but continued to lead his company until he was shot in the head. His name is on the Ladysmith Memorial.

Trooper Fred Lake of the Imperial Yeomanry. Son of William and Ann Lake. Born in Crediton in the December Quarter of 1877. Volunteered for service in South Africa and left  for training at Aldershot 13 January 1902 at the age of 24.

Private James Lake of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Sarah Lake. Born in Uffculme in the September Quarter of 1877. Mentioned in a letter home from William Jones in May 1900 as being "in hospital but improving."
LAMBERT, F
2443 Private Frederick Lambert of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Isiah and Ellen Lambert - married but identity of wife unknown. Born in Woodham Ferris, Essex, in the June Quarter of 1870. Wounded 23 February 1900 during the Relief of Ladysmith at the age of 29. 11 years service to that date.
LANGMEAD, A
Private Arthur John Langmead of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Mary Ann Langmead (by 1901, his mother was widowed and lived at Upton on Severn).. Born in Otterton in the June Quarter of 1875.  Died of enteric fever at Mooi River - date not known. Reservist.

24635 Trooper Richard Frederick Langley of the 27th (Devonshire) Company, 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Son of Richard and Emma Langley. Born in Tunbridge Wells in the June Quarter of 1879.
LARBY, J
Private John Larby of the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Caroline Larby. Born in Thursley (aka Thursleigh), Surrey, in the March Quarter of 1869. Wounded at Potgeiter's Drift 5 - 7 February 1900 at the age of 30. 11 years service at that date. Rejoined at the end of  his first contract with the Devons.

Private George Edward Law of the 5th (Haytor) Voluntary Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Alfred and Mary Ellen Law. Born in Exeter in the March Quarter of 1876 but later moeved to Newton Abbot. Volunteered in January 1900 and was accepted to go to the front. He returned safely and appears in the 1901 census described as the town's postman.
LAYCOCK, W
Private William Laycock of the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William Laycock of Stratford, Essex. Born in Liverpool in 1873. Wounded in action at Ladysmith 27 December 1899. Held the Clasp and medals for the Tirah and Punjab Frontier Campaigns. His brother John was a private in the Infantry Militia (see 1901 census).

23323 Trooper Herbert George Leavey of the 27th (Devonshire) Company, 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Son of George and Elizabeth Leavey. Born in Chippenham, Wilts, in the March Quarter of 1871. Volunteered for service in South Africa.

5583 Private Edward James Lee of the Devon Company of Volunteers. Son of John and Catherine Lee. Born in Bideford in the December Quarter of 1880. Invalided home to 60 Meddon Street, Bideford. Unable to be present at the Presentation of medals by Lord Roberts in Exeter on 9 September 1901.

4014 Private Leonard Lemon of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Ambrose and Susan Lemon. Born in Torquay in the September Quarter of 1878. Wounded in the assault on Ladysmith 6 Jan 1900 at the age of 21. Four years service at this date.

This man arrived back in Torquay with an arm missing from the shoulder and a permanently injured leg. Friends and neighbours got up a petition to Torquay Council asking them to employ Leonard Lemon in some small capacity in their gardens, perhaps just for the summer months. In spite of wide publicity in the local press, no reply ever came to their request.

Signaller Frederick Leonard of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Hugh and Harriet Leonard. Born in St. Marychurch in the September Quarter of 1873. Died of enteric fever in a military hospital 13 Feb 1900 aged 27. Wrote home from the front before his death.
LETHBY, G
Private George Lethby of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Mary Jane Lethby of Exeter. Born in Exeter - date unknown. Present at the Battle of Elandslaagte and the Relief of Ladysmith. Wrote a letter to his motherdetailing his experiences which was published in the local newspaper.
LIAS, F
Sapper Frederick William James Lias of the Devon & Somerset Royal Engineer Volunteers. Son of Robert and Annie Lias. Born in Exeter in the September Quarter of 1877. Volunteered to go to South Africa and left 8 February 1900 at the age of 22.
LIDSTONE, W
Private William Robert Lidstone of the 5th (Haytor) Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Johanna Lidstone. Born in Ashburton in  the December Quarter of 1872. Died of enteric at Eastcourt, South Africa 17 May 1900 aged 27.
LIGHT, T
Private Thomas Brown Light of the Totnes Volunteers. Son of John and Mary Light. Born in Ttones in the March Quarter of 1871. Volunteered for service in South Africa. He was employed by Messrs Tucker & Sons (printers) and they gave him a public send-off 20 Januaray 1900. Invalided home and can be found in the 1901 census. Unable to be present at the Presentation of medals by Lord Roberts in Exeter on 9 September 1901.

24678 Trooper George Bence Limbrick of the 27th (Devonshire) Company, 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Son of Thomas and Mary Limbrick. Born in Rod Hazleton, nr. Cirencester in the December Quarter of 1880. Volunteered for service in South Africa .

Trooper Francis Thomas Lisle of the 27th Company, the Devonshire Imperial Yeomanry. Son of John and Elizabeth Lisle. Born in Holsworthy in the March Quarter of 1881. Died in South Africa on Monday 30 December 1900.
LITTON, T
Private Thomas Burch Litton of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of James and Elizabeth Litton. Born in Lympstone in 1874. Killed in action at Ladysmith 6 January 1900. His name appears on the Ladysmith Memorial.
LIVERMORE, J
Private James Livermore of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of George and Alice Livermore (née Marshall). Born in Mucking, Essex in the June Quarter of 1878. Died in Ladysmith 25 March 1900 of enteric fever aged 21.

3522 Private Frederick Herbert P. Lock of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of James and Mary Lock. Born in Kingskerswell in 1875. Wounded in the assault on Ladysmith 6 Jan 1900 at the age of 25. Eight years service at that date. Tirah Medal and clasp.
LOCKYEAR, A
Civilian. Alfred Ernest Lockyear, a Post Office Engineer who volunteered to go out to South Africa where  he worked with the Royal Fusiliers on vital commincation links under Methuen at Modder. Son of Frederick William Lockyear, Post Master at Teignmouth and his wife Emma. Born at Hackney in the March Quarter of 1877.
LONG, S
Private Samuel Long of the 4th Volunteer Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Francis and Jane Long. Born in South Tawton in the March Quarter of 1881. Died of enteric at Standerton 29 September 1900 at the age of 19.
LONG, W
Private William Long of the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Francis and Jane Long and husband of Mary (née Setter). Born in South Tawton in the September Quarter of 1868. Reservist who re-enlisted. Wrote a letter home to Frank Skinner, his boss, which was published. Returned home safely to North Tawton and shows in the 1901 census back at work as the town's postman.
LOTT, F
3402 Private Frank Lott of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Charles and Mary Lott. Born in Stanway, Essex, in the March Quarter of 1873. Wounded at Ladysmith 6 January 1900 at the age of 26. 9 years service at that time. Held the medal and two clasps for the Tirah Campaign.
LOVERIDGE, F
24138 Trooper Frederick Loveridge of the Royal Devon Imperial Yeomanry. Son of George and Rebecca Loveridge. Born in Newton Abbot in the September Quarter of 1878. Volunteered and left for South Africa 6 February 1901 after an official send-off at Exeter.

6521 Private Charles Arthur Loveys of the Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry. Son of Arthur and Elizabeth (Bessie) Loveys and brother of Herbert Loveys. Born in Moretonhampstead in the March Quarter of 1875. Left for South Africa Jan 1900.  Survived the war and married Jessie Heyward in the June Quarter of 1903.

6521 Trooper Herbert Clampitt Loveys of the 27th Devon Imperial Yeomanry. Son of Arthur and Elizabeth (Bessie) Loveys and brother of Charles. Born in Moretonhampstead in the December Quarter of 1880. Wounded 22 December 1899 at the age of 29.

6025 Cyclist Samuel John Lowe of the Devon Volunteer Battalion. Son of Samuel and Emily Lowe. Born in Torquay in the December Quarter of 1879. Left for South Africa in April 1900. Invalided home to Lawes Bridge, Edginswell. Present at the presentation of medals by Lord Roberts in Exeter 9 September 1901.
LOWE, W
William Fred Lowe, son of William and Sarah Lowe of Exeter,  was a civilian member of Exeter's Telegraph Battalion who volunteered to work alongside the Royal Engineers in South Africa. His name appears on a board in Exeter's Guildhall.

7805 Trooper Harry George Lowick of the 25th Company (West Somerset), 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Son of John and Clara Lowick. Born in Exeter in the December Quarter of 1862 but moved to London as a child - enlisted in Plymouth. Invalided home in 1901.

Private James Lucraft of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Elizabeth Lucraft. Born in Bridgewater, Somerset in the March Quarter of 1866. Enlisted in 1886. In Ladysmith during the siege. Wrote a letter published when he was 34.

28047 Trooper Walter Luke of the 27th (Devonshire) Company, 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Son of Michael and Jane Luke. Born in Winlaton, nr. Durham, in the March Quarter of 1876.

Private Arthur Philip Luscombe of the 3rd Volunteer Brigade, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Philip and Emma Luscombe. Born in Newton Abbot in the March Quarter of 1874. His brigade formed part of Devon Service Company which joinedPresent at Exeter to receive his medal from Lord Roberts 9 September 1901. the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment in Natal in 1900.

Trooper George Dallyn Somerton Luscombe of the Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry. Son of Thomas and Mary Luscombe. Born in Torquay in the September Quarter of 1880. Volunteered and left for Aldreshot 6 Jan 1902.

4737 Lance Corporal John Lyndon of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Thomas and Elizabeth Lyndon. Born in Revelstoke in 1879 but moved to Exeter. Taken prisoner at Colenso.
