Private Charles Frederick Sale of the 1st Volunteer Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment.  A reservist - he was in regular service as a sergeant in the 1st Battalion stationed at Plymouth. Born in Ludlow, Herefordshire, in 1859. Husband of Norah. Present at Exeter to receive his medal from Lord Roberts 9 September 1901.

4672 Private Albert Edward Salter of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Emma Salter (widow). Born in Bridgwater in the September Quarter of 1876. Killed at Ladysmith 6 January 1900 at the age of 23.

24434 Private Arthur Salter of the 27th (Devonshire) Company, 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Son of Philip and Jane Salter. Born in Broadclyst in the September Quarter of 1864. Volunteered for service in South Africa. The War Office reported him dangerously ill with enteric at Ermelo12 April 1902.

28055 Trooper Bernard Arthur Salter of the 27th (Devonshire) Company, 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Son of Samuel and Johamina (sic) Salter. Born in Seaton in the December Quarter of 1878. Volunteered for service in South Africa.

Captain Philip Stanley Salter ( "Stanley") of the 25th Company, the Imperial Yeomanry. ( Promoted through the ranks). Son of Philip and Jane Salter. Born in Broadclyst in the March Quarter of 1872. Volunteered to go to South Africa. Killed in action at Rooival, in the Transvaal 11 April 1902 at the age of 30. Appears on the Hele's School South African War Roll of Honour.

Private George Henry Sanders of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of George and Ellen Sanders. Born in South Molton in the September Quarter of 1875. Wounded in the assault on Ladysmith 6 January 1900 at the age of 24. 4 years service to that date.

Private William Henry Sanders ("Henry") of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Julia Samders. Born in Ottery St. Mary in the March Quarter of 1879. Wounded at the battle of Colenso 15 December 1899 at the age of 20.

22575 Trooper Frank Henry Satchwell of the 27th (Devonshire) Company, 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Son of Thomas and Caroline Satchwell. Born in Highgate in the June Quarter of 1878. volunteered for service in South Africa.

Private William Satterford of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Martha Satterford.. Born in Torquay in the June Quarter of 1870. In the siege of Ladysmith. Wrote home from the front.

5562 Private John Satterley of the Devon Company of Volunteers. Son of Thomas and Mary Satterley. Born in Torquay in the March Quarter of 1880. Invalided home to 6 Hoxton Road, Torquay. Present at Exeter to receive his medal from Lord Roberts 9 September 1901.

Sergeant William Saunders of the 5th Haytor Volunteer Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of  Susan Saunders (widow). Bornin Chudleigh in 1877. Returned safely to Exeter Street, Chudleigh 7 June 1901.
SCADDING, A
Private Albert Scadding of the Plymouth Company, the Royal Marines Light Infantry. Son of William and Elizabeth - his brother Samuel seems to have been his next-of-kin. born in Stoke Gabriel in the march Quarter of 1878. Killed in action in August 1900 at the age of 22.

Private Albert George Seary of the 1sr Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Thomas and Mary Ann Seary and husband of Marth (née Hawkins). Born in Abingdon in the June Quarter of 1879. Enlisted in 1895. Returned home safely June 1902.
SELDON, A
Private Arthur Seldon of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Elizabeth Seldon. Born in Braunton in 1864. His father was a Royal Marines Light Infantry pensioner with 21 years service. He wrote a letter home which was published in the local press.

Private James Setherton of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Elizabeth Setherton. Born in Marionsleigh in the June Quarter of 1877. A letter written home by him was published in the local press.
SEXTON, A
2441 Private Alfred Sidney C. Sexton of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of James and Charlotte Sexton. Born in Holborn, London, in the September Quarter of 1867. Wounded 23 February 1900 at the age of 32. 11 years service at that time.
SHAPLAND, A
3457 Corporal Albert Henry Shapland of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of James and Ann Shapland. His mother died when he was a baby and he appears, from census returns, to have been brought up by relatives. Born in Exeter in the September Quarter of 1871. Wounded in action at Ladysmith at the age of 28. Held the Tirah medal. 8 years service.

Volunteered for service in South Africa and returned safely. Present at Exeter to receive his medals from Lord Roberts 9 September 1901.

Private James Albert Sharp(e) of the 5th (Haytor) Volunteer Battalion . Son of Charles and Margaret Sharp. Born in Plymouth in 1878 but the family moved to the Kingsteignton area. Invalided home to Pottery Cottages, Kingsteignton but appears in the 1901 census back at work in the local Pottery. Present at Exeter to receive his medals from Lord Roberts 9 September 1901.

Private Samuel Shortridge of the 4th Volunteer Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Samuel and Mary Ann Shortridge. Born in Bideford in the March Quarter of 1881. Invalided home to 5 Bull Hill, Bideford. Present at Exeter to receive his medals from Lord Roberts 9 September 1901.
SHORTRIDGE, T 3276 Private Thomas Shortridge of the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Samuel and Mary Ann Shortridge of Torridge Street, East-the-Water, Bideford.; brother of Samuel (above). Born in Bideford in the Septemebr Quarter of 1877. Held the QSA with a bar for Natal. Final discharge on 30 April 1902.

2480 Private Ralph Simmonds of the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Ralph and Louisa Simmonds. Born in Haselmere, Surrey, in the December Quarter of 1862. Wounded at Potgeiter's Drift 5 February 1900 at the age of 37. 10 years service at that date. Held the Indian medal and Clasp.

Private Charlie Baker Simpson of the 2nd Battalion, the devonshire regiment. Son of Charlie and Anne Simpson. Born in Dulverton in the March Quarter of 1868. Died of enteric at Reitfontein 21 September 1900 at the age of 32.
SIMS, J
Corporal James Sims of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Parents not yet identified. Born in St Helier in the Channel Islands probably around 1878 and joined the regiment as a boy entrant in 1890. Severely wounded 21 October 1899 at Elandslaagte; shot in the left arm and both legs then shot again as he lay wounded.

3129 Private Henry Slade of the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Henry and Elizabeth Slade. Born in Great Torrington in the December Quarter of 1873. Taken prisoner at the Battle of Colenso 15 Dec 1899 and released from Pretoria in June 1900. Reservist.

Private William Slade of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Believed to have been brought up by his grandparents, James and Jane Downing and to have been born in Newton St. Petrock in 1879. Dangerously wounded at Elandslaagte 21 October 1899 aged 20.

6577 Private John Richard Slader of the 27th (Devonshire) Company, 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Son of John and Elizabeth Slader. Born in North Molton in the June Quarter of 1873.
SMALE, F
5520 Corporal Francis Lee Smale of the 1st Rifle Volunteers which joined the 2nd Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment in Natal in 1900. Son of Samuel and Emma Lee. Born in Chulmleigh in the June Quarter of 1866. Became seriously ill with enteric at Pietermariztburg 16 February 1901 at the age of 35 and was eventually invalided home to the White Hart Hotel, Chulmleigh.
SMALE, S
Private Samuel John Smale of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Richard and Elizabeth Smale. Born in Buckland Monachorum in the June Quarter of 1874. Died in 1900 aged 25 and remembered on a memorial in Ermington Church. Can be found in the 1891 census at Exeter Barracks, aged 17.

Private William Smale of the 4th Battalion, the Devon Company of Volunteers. Brought up by his uncle and aunt, Richard and Mahala Smale. Born in Exbourne in the March Quarter of 1876. Died of dysentery in South Africa 29 March 1900 at the age of 24. Commemorated in Exbourne Church.

6556 Private William Henry Smallridge of the 27th Company (Devonshire), 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Son of James and Mary Jane Smallridge. Born in South Molton in the June Quarter of 1877. Volunteered for service in South Africa and invalided home.

Trooper William Smerdon of the Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry. Son of Thomas and Annie Smerdon. Born in Ottery St. Mary in the March Quarter of 1881. Volunteered and left for Aldershot 6 January 1902 at the age of 20.

1711 Colour Sergeant Charles Smith of the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William H and Elizabeth Smith. Born in Moretonhampstead in the March Quarter of 1866. Taken prisoner at the Battle of Colenso 15 Dec 1899 at the age of 33. Released from Pretoria in June 1900. Mentioned in despatches 8 February 1901. Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for gallantry - gazetted 27 September 1901.

Private James Smith of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Sarah Smith. Born in North Molton in 1879. Mentioned in Jim Bawden's letter home which was published. Killed in action at Geluk 26 August 1900 at the age of 21.

2633 Private John Snook of the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Annie Snook. Born in Broadclyst in the March Quarter of 1875. Taken prisoner at the Battle of Colenso 15 Dec 1899 and released from Pretoria in June 1900. Reservist.

SONGHURST, F 6557 Private Frederick John Songhurst of the 27th (Devonshire) Company, 7th Battalion, Imperial Yeomanry. Son of George and Caroline Songhurst. Born in Barnstaple in the December Quarter of 1879.

Sergeant John Charles Southcombe of the 4th Volunteer Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Charles and Ann Southcombe. Born in Arlington in the June Quarter of 1873. Returned safely to East Stowford, Barnstaple June 1901. Present at Exeter to receive his medal from Lord Roberts 9 September 1901.
SPARKES, T
1998 Private Tom Sparkes of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Selina Sparkes and husband of Florence (née Leaworthy). Born in Uffculme in the December Quarter of 1870. Wounded in the Battle of Colenso 15 Dec 1899 at the age of 29. 13 years service at that date. He survived to become one of Uffculme's postman on his return to England.
SPARROW, B
Lieutenant Benjamin Charles Sparrow of the 1st Battalion, the 39th Garhuwal Rifles. Son of Benjamin Sparrow (merchant) and his wife Mary (née Hutchings) of Cleeve House, Ermington. Born in Ermington in the March Quarter of 1882. Educated at North Hill House Boy's School, Plymouth. Saw active service in South Africa. Held the Queen's Medal with five clasps. Killed in the Great War 10 March 1915 at the age of 33.

Trooper John Davie Sparrow of the 25th (West Somerset) Company, the Imperial Yeomanry. Son of Benjamin and Izette Sparrow. Born in Kingsbridge in the June Quarter of 1873. Invalided home in February 1901 at the age of 26.
SPEAR, A
4729 Private Albert Spear of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Susan Spear. Born in Holsworthy in the March Quarter of 1879. Severely wounded at Elandslaagte 21 October 1899 at the age of 20. Did his training in 1895.
SPEARMAN, G

Lance Corporal George Henry Spearman of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of James and Charity Spearman. Born in Bideford in the September Quarter of 1869. Killed in action at Tugela 17 Feb 1900 at the age of 30. 11 years service to that date. Reservist. His family were living at Desborough Rd., Plymouth at the the time of his death.

An Exeter L & SW railway spokesman wrote in the local press: "The deepest sympathy is felt by the L & SW Railway Company's employees in the West of England with the family of James Spearman, for many years engine driver between Exeter and Plymouth, whose son was killed at the Colenso battle in the Transvaal."

SPREADBURY, G
4510 Private George Spreadbury of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Frederick and Ann Spreadbury. Born in Enford, Wilts, in the December Quarter of 1873. Wounded at Ladysmith 6 January 1900 at the age of 26. 5 years service at that date. Held the Tirah medal.
SPRIDDLE, S
5623 Private Sydney Robert G. Spriddle of the Devon Company of Volunteers. Son of William and Mary Ann Spriddle. Born in Devonport in the March Quarter of 1878. Invalided home to 72 Gloucester Street, Devonport. Present at Exeter to receive his medals from Lord Roberts 9 September 1901.

SPRING, H

Lieutenant Henry Geoffrey Spring of the 27th (Devon Company) the Imperial Yeomanry. Son of the Reverend Henry Coleridge Spring and his wife Constance (née Paynter). (Rev. Spring was at various times Rector of Tiverton and Rector of Alwington as well as being an Army Chaplain with the British troops in India. There is a Boer War memorial to two of his sons in the church of St. Andrews, Alwington). Born in Calcutta in 1881. Wounded in action at Vlakfontein 29 May 1901 - shot and killed by Boer soldiers while lying wounded on the battlefield at the age of 20.
SPRING, H

2nd Lieutenant Harold Paynter Spring of the 28th Punjabi Regiment. Son of the Reverend Henry Coleridge Spring and his wife Constance (née Paynter); brother of Geoffrey Spring (see above). Born in India in 1886. Died of enteric in India in 1905.

Together with his brother and sister, he was brought up in Tiverton by his aunt, Emma Spring.

STADDON,W
Gunner William Staddon of the 23rd Welsh Fusiliers. Son of William and Leah Staddon. (His father was blind and worked as a basket maker). Born in Uffculme in the March Quarter of 1873. At the Battle of Colenso. Wounded at Fredericstaad 25 October 1900 at the age of 27 by an expanding bullet in the leg. After 3 operations and two partial amputations, he eventually lost the limb completely. Returned home June 1901.

23330 Corporal Robert Hague Stafford of the 27th (Devonshire) Company, 7th Battalion, Imperial Yeomanry. Son of Thomas and Annie Stainer. Born in Ratcliffe, Culey, Leics, in the March Quarter of 1880. Volunteered for service in South Africa.

4719 Private Stephen Baram Stapeley of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Louisa Stapeley. Born in Exeter in the June Quarter of 1877. Wounded in the assault on Ladysmith 6 Jan 1900 at the age of 23. Four years service at that date.
STEAD, W
6581 Trooper William Stead of the 27th Devonshire Company (Cornish section) of the Imperial Yeomanry. Son of Francis and Elizabeth Stead and husband of Ellen (née Bunney). Born in Boconnoc, Cornwall in 1868. Slightly wounded 13 December 1900 at the age of 32. Returned to St. Winnow, Cornwall in 1901 to continue farming.
STEBBING, E
3285 Lance Corporal Ernest Albert Stebbing of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Henry and Harriet Stebbing. Born in Watton, Norfolk, in the March Quarter of 1870. Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for conspicuous gallantry on 23 February 1900 when, he, together with 3059 Lance Corporal G. Robbins, carried wounded men away from the firing line under very heavy fire.

2938 Private Charles Stentiford of the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Charles and Sarah Stentiford. Born in Wonford, Exeter in the December Quarter of 1873. Taken prisoner at the Battle of Colenso 15 Dec 1899 and released from Pretoria in June 1900. Reservist.
STENTIFORD, H
Private Herbert Stentiford of the 40th ASC Company, the 3rd Devonshire Regiment. Son of James and Mehala Stentiford. Born in Zeal Monachirum in July 1875. Captured by the Boers 6 Feb 1900 at the age of 25 and released 6 June 1900. Wrote to the local press about his experiences as a prisoner.
STIDWELL, C
Private Charles Stidwell (usually Stidwill) of the 1st Rifle Volunteers. Son of Joshua and Ann Stidwill. Born in Holsworthy in the March Quarter of 1872. Died in South Africa. He was taken ill at Ladysmith and removed to a convalescent home at Mooi River where he later died. The Rifle Volunteers formed part of the Devon Service Company which joined the 2nd Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment in Natal in 1900. His name appears on a board in Exeter's Guildhall.
STOCKER, C
5534 Private Charles John Stocker of the 1st Rifle Volunteer Brigade, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Sarah Stocker. Born in Huntsham, nr. Tiverton, in the September Quarter of 1870. His name appears on a board in Exeter's Guildhall. He was the only married man among Exeter's original volunteers. Died of dysentery at Ladysmith 27 July 1900 aged 30. Buried by the Manchester Regiment under Surprise Hill.

5475 Sergeant Alfred Herman Stone of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Mary Stone (widow). Born in West Teignmouth in the December Quarter of 1872. Mentioned in Desptaches 8 March 1901 by Lord Kitchener (see London Gazette).

5565 Private William Aubrey Stone of the 5th (Haytor) Volunteer Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Henry and Elizabeth Stone. Born in Sherford in the September Quarter of 1875. Died from dysentery at Elandslaagte 29 March 1900 aged 24.
STONEMAN, F
Corporal Frederick Samuel J, Stoneman of the Decon and Somerset Volunteer Engineers. Son of James and Harriet Stoneman. Born in Exeter in the March Quarter of 1878. Taken prisoner but later released, Died from enteric at Pretoria 27 December 1899 at the age of 21. His father died just after he had left for South Africa. His name appears on the board in Exeter's Guildhall. He played football for Heavitree.

Information kindly supplied by a family member:

Private William Stoneman of the 1st Battalion the Devonshire Regiment.  Son of William and Elizabeth Jane Stoneman.  Born on 12 March 1877 at Bullapitt Down, Werrington, Devon.  He was awarded the Queen’s South Africa medal with Elandslaagt, Defence of Ladysmith and Belfast clasps; and the King’s South Africa medal with clasps for 1901 and 1902.

William’s army records show that he joined the Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry on 9 Oct 1894, was released to the Army Service Corps as a  Driver on 7 Jul 1895 and transferred to the Devonshire Regiment on 20 Sep 1895.  During Williams’s time with the Devonshire Regiment he was in India from 9 Nov 1898 to 20 Nov 1899 and in South Africa from 21 Sep 1899 to 23 Nov 1901, returning to England on 24 Nov 1901.

Private Spencer James Streeter of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of James and Elizabeth Streeter. Born in Maresfield, Sussex in the December Quarter of 1871. Was transferred from the Hussars to the Devonshire Regiment and severely wounded at Elandslaagte 21 October 1899 at the age of 27.

Trooper George Baxter Strother of the Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry. Son of the Rev..James Strother and  his wife Edith. Born in Buckfastleigh in the June Quarter of 1879. Left for South Africa Jan 1900.

5227 Private Thomas Sussex of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Jane Sussex. Born in Atherington in the December Quarter of 1873. Wounded in the fighting for the relief of Ladysmith Feb 14 - 27 1900 at the age of 26. 2 years service at that date.

24560 Trooper George Wilson Sutcliffe of the 27th (Devonshire) Company, 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Son of Webster and Eliza Sutcliffe. Born in Hull in the September Quarter of 1876. Volunteered for service in South Africa.

3430 Private Roland Sutton of the 2nd battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Mark and Jane Sutton. Born in Birmingham in the December Quarter of 1877. Wounded during the relief of Ladysmith 23 February 1900 at the age of 23. 8 years service at that time.

Drummer Alfred Edward Taylor of the 3rd Volunteer Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Weslyan Minister Alfred Taylor and his wife Matilda. Born in Oundle in the March Quarter of 1870. Returned safely in June 1901 to his parents' home in North Tawton. Present at Exeter to receive his medal from Lord Roberts 9 September 1901.

Corporal William Henry Taylor of the 1st Battalion, the King's Royal Rifles. Son of William and Cordelia Taylor. Born in Exeter in the March Quarter of 1874. Wrote home after Ladysmith had been relieved.

Private (later Corporal) James Charles Tett of the 1st Volunteer Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Hugh and Charlotte Tett. Born in Exeter in the March Quarter of 1878. Returned safely from South Africa in June 1901 to 8 Victoria Street, Exeter.

6558 Private Henry Arnold Thorne of the 27th (Devonshire) Company, 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Son of Arnold and Mary Thorne. Born in Barnstaple in the September Quarter of 1881. Volunteered for service in South Africa.

Trooper William Lock Thorne of the Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry. Son of William and Mary Ann Thorne. (His father, an ironmonger, was mayor of Tiverton at the time). Born in Tiverton in the December Quarter of 1877. Reported to be severely wounded 28 December 1900 at the age of 23. 4753 Private Francis Henry Tilke of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Ann Tilke. Born in Bideford in the September Quarter of 1878. Wounded at Elandslaagte 21 Oct 1899 at the age of 21. He must have made some sort of a recovery because the 1901 census shows him in the Town Barracks, Exeter, training new recruits to the Regiment.

Corporal William John Tincombe of the ASC, the Devonshire Regiment (nickname = "Wheeler"). Son of Edward and Sarah Tincombe of Heavitree, Exeter. Born in Honiton in the March Quarter of 1871. A letter he wrote home from Standerton was published in August 1900.

Trooper George Newcombe Tooker of the 1st Devon Yeomanry. Son of Johna and Mary Tooker and husband of Mary Anthony Rowe. Born in Princetown in 1868. Volunteered for service in South Africa.

Private Samuel Tottle of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of David and Ellen Tottle. Born in West Buckland, Somerset, in the March Quarter of 1877. Reported dangerously wounded at Elandslaagte 21 October 1899 at the age of 22. Survived and can be found in Gloucester in the 1901 census.

Private Frank Reuben Towell of the 3rd Volunteer Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment.  Son of Henry and Rebecca Towell. Born in Honiton in the March Quarter of 1870. This Battalion formed part of the Devon Service Company which joined the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment in Natal in 1900. Returned home safely June 1901. Present at Exeter to receive his medal from Lord Roberts 9 September 1901.

The Rifle Volunteers formed part of the Devon Service Company which joined the 2nd Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment in Natal in 1900. His name appears on a board in Exeter's Guildhall. Invalided home. Present at Exeter to receive his medal from Lord Roberts 9 September 1901.

Present at Exeter to receive his medal from Lord Roberts 9 September 1901.

Died of meningitis at Pietermaritzburg 29 December 1899 at the age of 30. 10 years service at that date. Held Punjab and Tirah medals and clasps. Unmarried.

2989 Lance Corporal Albert G Vern of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Seems to have been brought up by grandparents James and Mary Ann Vern. Born in Bow in the June Quarter of 1874. Killed in action at Ladysmith 6 Jan 1900 at the age of 25. 10 years service to this date. His name appears on the Waggon Hill Memorial. Held the Indian Medal with clasps.

3456 Corporal Thomas Sherwood Vicary of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of James and Sarah Vicary. Born in Higher Holcombe in the December Quarter of 1873. Died of enteric at Pietermaritzburg 17 April 1900 aged 26.
VINCENT, A
3420 Drummer Albert John Vincent of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Sophia Vincent. (His father was one of the Metropolitan Police brought in to protect Devonport Dockyard.) Born in Devonport in the June Quarter of 1880. Reported by the War Office to be "dangerously ill with enteric" at Standerton 23 February 1901.
