ASHCOMBE - THE 1914 WAR MEMORIAL

 

Ashcombe 1914 War Memorial
Formerly, the war memorial was in a pitiful state. It lists the names of all the men in the village who did anything connected with the war, ( including the 5 dead listed below).  Hopefully, the names will receive further cleaning or replacement but the villagers are certainly making a huge effort to tidy this area.

 

A.BLACKMORE
7685 Private Andrew Blackmore of the 3rd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment, transferred as 359764 of the 1032nd Labour Corps. Born in Minehead, Somerset in 1886. Died 21 November 1918 aged 32.
W.J.MILLER
14831 Private William John Miller of the 8th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Charlotte Miller of Broadclyst and her husband; husband of Edith Miller of Honiton Clyst. Born in Dawlish in 1879. Died 26 October 1917 aged 38.
J.U.TICKELL
14083 Private James Underhay Tickell of 3 Heron Cottages, Ashcombe. Son of Annie Tickell and the late James.  Born in Ashcombe in 1897. Died 22 April 1915 aged 18.
W.J.TICKELL
6401 Private William James Tickell of the 24th Battalion, the Australian Infantry.  Son of Annie Tickell of Dawlish and the late James Tickell; brother of James. (see above). Born in Ashcombe in 1896. Died 25 March 1918 aged 22. He had emigrated to Australia and was working there as a labourer when war broke out.
J.CLARKE
20534 Private John Clarke of the 7th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Edward and Mary Ann Clarke; husband of Rhoda Clarke of Exeter. Born in 1880 in Ashcombe. Died 3 December 1918 aged 38. Buried in Ashcombe churchyard.
