The Friends of Devon Archives have used a grant from the Lottery Heritage Fund to compile selected pieces of information relating to 18th century Devon.
After the Atterbury Plot (1720), men, and women too, were supposed to go before a Justice of the Peace to swear an oath of allegiance to King George I. The names of those who did so were recorded on parchment rolls now kept in the Devon Record Office. The rolls are not complete.
As part of this project, Pat Williams has used parish registers and other contemporary documents to compile notes on the known Ashwater oath-takers. These notes can be found at
