REAR ADMIRAL WILLIAM ARTHUR

Rear Admiral William Arthur, RN; CB, was the eldest son of the Rev. James Arthur, Rector of Atherington for over 40 years.

James Arthur did not live to see his son's death having died in November 1878 aged 81. William Arthur died 15 Nov 1886 aged 56 and was buried in Atherington on 19 Nov 1886. William's widow, Mary Jane Arthur (née le Mesurier) erected a monument to her husband in St. Ann's Church, Portsmouth, a church which is full of naval memorials and monuments.

However, St. Ann's is situated on the Naval Base at Portsmouth and these days, entry to the church is by permit only.
