BARUM BOY SCOUTS ROLL OF HONOUR 1914

"From Barnstaple's 1st and 2nd Troops of Baden Powell's Boy Scouts, the following past and present members have joined the services:"

Published by the North Devon Journal in November 1914.  These were  the very early days of the Great War when people were still telling each other  it would all  be over by Christmas. There was no conscription at this time and being a volunteer was greatly respected, especially in communities where there was a strong interest in the Territorial Movement.
