W. ACKLAND
5254 Private William Ackland of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William Ackland of Knowle, Braunton, and the late Eliza Ackland; husband of Gertrude Ackland of East John Street, Exeter. Born in Braunton in 1888. Died 24 January 1918 aged 38.
C. W. ADAMS
52918 Corporal Charles William Adams of the Royal Engineers. He was the son of John and Mary Adams of Meddon Street, Bideford; husband of Elizabeth Dymond of Plymouth. His military history is complex. He enlisted in the Royal Engineers on 12 August 1886 and served with them until 20 April 1905 when he requested discharge. At the start of hostilities, he re-enlisted but was discharged as being permanently unfit on 18 February 1916 - at this time he was serving at No 9 Depot Company at Deganwy, Wales. He did not die on active service.

203221 Private Harry Andrews of the 6th Battalion, the Wiltshire Regiment. Son of William and Sarah Andrews. Born in Barry Dock, Glamorgan in 1891, Died 10 April 1918 aged 27.

2273 Private William J. Arnold of the 1st/6th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Thomas and Mary Jane Arnold of Newport Terrace, Bideford. Born in Parkham in 1891. Died 25 March 1916 aged 25.

Details of his military career have not yet been confirmed. Son of David and Minnie Arthur of 2 Penhryn Terrace, Bideford. Born in Bideford in the June Quarter of 1894.

3363 Private Ernest Arthur of the 1st.6th battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of David and Minnie Arthur of 2 Penhryn Terrace, Bideford; brother of David Arthur (above). Born in Bideford in 1898. Died 8 March 1916 aged 18.
V. J. D ASCOTT
No number. Vincent John Dawson Ascott was a volunteer in the Nyasaland Reserve. he was the son of William Ascott, a local Veterinary surgeon and his wife Frances Ascott . He was born in Bideford in 1893. Died 9 September 1914 aged 22. Buried in Karouga.

28133 Corporal Sydney John  ("Jack") Ayre of the 1st Battalion, the Somerset Light Infantry. Son of Mary Ayre of Barnstaple Street, South Molton and the late Sydney Herbert Ayre. Born in South Molton in the September Quarter of 1898. Died 22 June 1918 aged 19.

1138 Sergeant Charles Reginald Babb of "D" Company, 18th battalion, the Australian infantry. Son of Frederick and Mary Ann Babb. Born in Bideford in 1891. Died 16 May 1918 aged 27.

Papers exist which show that Charles Cassimer Babb joined the 4th Battalion, Devonshire Regiment on 13 July 1899 and then signed up for the Royal Navy. Beyond that, there is no further confirmed information re his military career. Son of William and Elizabeth Ann Babb of Hartland. Born in Hartland 5 May 1892. He is not listed among naval casualties.

18787 Private Reginald J. Bettiss of the 9th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Frederick and Alice Bettiss. Born in Bideford in the December Quarter of 1896. Died of blood poisoning 19 August 1916  aged 19 in a military hospital in Yorkshire. Buried in Bideford Church cemetery.

Died at Gallipoli 4 May 1915 aged 49. An Australian soldier and politician who was awarded the Volunteer's Decoration.

2nd Mate Sydney James Craner  of the Mercantile Marine, SS Hebburn which had been requisitioned by the Royal Navy. Son of Margaret and the late James Craner; husband of Matilda Craner of 9 Victoria Grove, Bideford.  Born in Appledore in the June Quarter of 1880.
