3356 Private Wilfred William Shaddick of the 1st/6th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of  William and Edith Shaddick. Born  in Bideford in 1898. Died 8 March 1916 aged 18.

3/6773 Sydney Daniel Sheppard of the 2dn Battalion, the Devonshire regiment. Born in Bideford in 1890. Died 8 March 1917 aged 20.

J/24384 Able Seaman of the Royal Navy, HM Submarine G8.Son of John and Susanna Short of Tray Lane, Atherington. Born in Atherington 19 November 1896. Died 3 January 1918 aged 22.

The date of this man's death is not necessarily accurate. G8 was lost in the North Sea around this date but the cause of her loss is not known  nor has her final position been located.

T1/2702 Driver Richard Shortridge of the Army Service Corps; attached to 852 Coy, the Royal Field Artillery. Son of Henry and Lucy  Shortridge of Brookfield Terrace, Bideford; brother of Jesse (above). Born in Bideford in 1875. Died 16 November 1918 aged 43.

14647 Private William H. Shute of the "B" Coy, 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Alfred and Wilmot Shute; husband of Frances Cullick (formerly Shute). Born in Hartland in 1893. Died 20 October 1918 aged 25. Awarded the Military Medal.

30864 Private Alfred Shutt of the 6th Battalion, the Dorset Regiment. Son of John and Grace of Pitt Lane, Bideford; husband of Marion Heal (formerly Shutt) of Clifton Street, East-the-Water. Born in Bideford in 1889. Died 26 September 1918 aged 29.
W. W. SKYNNER
Lieutenant William Walker Skynner, RN of HMS Hampshire. Son of William and Marie Louise of "Marshland", Abbotsham Road, Bideford. Born in Bideford in the March Quarter of 1889. Died 5 June 1916 at the conclusion of the Battle of Jutland when HMS Hampshire was mined and sank off the  Orkneys with huge loss of life including that of Lord Kitchener and his party who were on a secret mission to Russia.

Lance Corporal Arthur Cecil Carson Smith of the Garry Horse (CA). Son of J. J. Smith (architect) of Bridgeland Street, Bideford. Born in Highworth in the March Quarter of 1886. Died 10 August 1918 aged 32, A Canadian citizen. Awarded the Military medal.

13312 Private Robert Stoneman of the 1st/6th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Philip and Grace Stoneman; husband of Clara Stoneman of Hart Street, Bideford. Born in Monkleigh in 1885. Died 8 September 1916 aged 39.

17528 Private William James Stoneman of the 3rd Battalion, the Coldstream Guards. Son of Sidney and Mary Ann Stoneman of Brookfield Terrace, Bideford. Born in Clovelly in the December Quarter of 1896. Died 25 September 1916 aged 19.

Major Humphrey St. Leger Stucley of the 1st Battalion, the King's Company, the Grenadier Guards. Son of the late Sir George Stucley (born in Bideford in 17 August 1812) and his wife Louisa (née Granville) Born in Exbury, Hants 7 June 1877. Died 29 October 1914 aged 37. Also served in the South African War.

707181 Private Frederick Claud Symons of the 54th Battalion, the Canadian Infantry. Son of William and Mary Symons of Reath Terrace, Fowey, Cornwall. Born in St Austell in the June quarter of 1883. Died 9 April 1917 aged 34.

30256 Corporal Charles Victor Taylor of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Charles and Rosina Taylor of Torrington Street, Bideford. Born in Barnstaple in 1894. Died 23 April 1917 aged 23.

20684 Private William Thompson of the 6th Battalion, the Dorset Regiment. Son of Percy and Emily Thompson of Moreton , Bideford. Born in South Molton in 1900. Died 22 August 1918 aged 19. He was formerly chaffeur to Sir Hugh Stucley.
