BOVEY TRACEY WAR MEMORIAL 1939 - 1945

 

Bovey Tracey War memorial in the heart of the town

The War Memorial in the very heart of the town. (we are facing the 1939 plaque on the plinth.) The old Town Cross was refurbished to become Bovey's War Memorial  and moved to stand next to the Town Hall which was built on the original village Green in 1866.

H.E.BEER
5625061 Private Harold Edwin Beer of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Edwin Beer (mother, née Brearley). Born in Bovey Tracey in the June Quarter of 1916. Died 6 June 1944 aged 28.  
E.CANN

920262 Bombardier Eric Cann, of 170 Bty. 61 (11th Bn. The London Regt.) H.A.A. Regt., Royal Artillery.  Son of Alfred and Emma Cann of Bovey Tracey; husband of Joyce Lilian Cann, of Rainham, Essex. Died 26 October 1942 aged 21. Remembered with honour at Alexandria (Hadra) War Memorial Cemetery.

Eric was one of a group of local Territorial youngsters serving with 382 Battery 96th Field Regt Royal Devon Yeomanry who were mobilised on Friday Sept 1 1939. Classified as "immatures" they were transferred to 170 Bty 61st Middx Regt on Nov 6th 1939 which saw them stationed at Hornchurch Aerodrome (explaining how he married a girl from Rainham).

1175691 Aircraftman 2nd Class Rodney Dennis Coombes of the RAF VR. Son of Albert and Nora Coombes of Bovey Tracey. Born in Bovey in 1921. Died 5 July 1941 aged 20.
W.E.DAVEY
D/K 55432 Stoker 1st Class William Edwin Davey of the Royal Navy, HMS Monck. Son of Henry and Susannah Davey; husband of Emma Davey of Bovey tracey. Born in Bovey Tracey 15 March 1889. Died 12 April 1945 aged 56.

610629 Sergeant Denton Percy Dixon of the RAF, 204 Squadron. Son of Thomas and Agnes Dixon of Bovey Tracey. Born in Bovey in 1920. Died 21 July 1940 aged 20.
B.G.FERGUSON
2761997 Private Bryan Gratney Ferguson of the Black Watch attached to No 3 Commando. Son of Captain H. Ferguson MC; MVO and his wife Helen. Born in Bovey in 1923. Died 22 February 1944 aged 21. Buried in Bovey Tracey Cemetery.

W/192499 Private Alice Grace Heath of the ATS. Daughter of John and Ethel Heath of Bovey Tracey. Born in Bovey in the September Quarter of 1925. Died 26 June 1944 aged 18. Buried in Bovey Tracey Cemetery.
J.C.LEACH

Captain John Catterall Leach of the Royal Navy, HMS Prince of Wales. Husband of Evelyn Leach (née Lee).

He was Captain of the ship that carried Winston Church across the Atlantic to Newfoundland at the height of the war to a secret meeting with President Roosevelt arranged to ask for help from The United States in fighting the war. He died later in same year of that epic voyage, aged 47, when his ship was struck by a Japanese torpedo on 10 December 1941. Awarded the DSO and the MVO.

14352864 Trooper Reginald James Martin of the 2nd Northamptonshire Yeomanry. Son of Mr and Mrs J.H.S. Martin of Bovey Tracey. Born in Bovey in 1924. Died 30 June 1944 aged 20.
R.E.SMARIDGE
48111 Pilot Officer Richard Eric Smaridge of the RAF VR, 88 Squadron. Son of Richard and Alice Smaridge. Born in Bovey in 1919. Died 6 February 1942 aged 23.
L.J.WILLS
5623488 Private Leonard John Wills of the 6th Battalion, the South Wales Borderers. Son of William and Mabel Wills of Bovey Tracey. Born in Bovey in 1919. Died 6 December 1944 aged 25.
T.WOOD
1236752 Flight Sergeant/ Air Gunner Terence Albert Wood of the RAF, 49 Squadron Bomber Command. Son of Albert and Elsie Wood. Born in December 1923. Died 10 August 1943 aged 20.
