BOW - ENTRY IN ROBSON'S DIRECTORY OF 1839 |
Bow, or Nymet Tracey, on a branch of the river Taw, 8 miles west from Crediton and 15 miles north-west from Exeter contained, in 1831, 962 inhabitants; the annual value of assessed property in 1815 being £2165.
A great market for cattle is held on the second Thursday in March and fiars are held on Holy Thursday and November 22nd, for cattles and sheep. The Court of the Duchy of Cornwall is usually kept here, and the town is governed by a portrieve* elected annually. At Bow is a manufacture of tanned leather
.
The church, dedicated to St. Batholomew, is about one mile from the twon; the living is a rectory, value £335 per annum. This parish is in Crediton Union. |
