241365 Private William Allin of the 1st Battalion, the Queen's own Regiment (the Royal West Kent). Son of Samuel and Ann Allin of Bideford. Born in Bideford in 1887. Died 3 October 1917 aged 30.

8632 Private Thomas Bidder of the 4th Battalion, the Coldstream Guards. Son of John and Eliza Bidder of Lower Winsham, Braunton; brother of Walter (see below). Born in Braunton in 1897. Died 16 August 1915 aged 18. Buried in the churchyard of St Brannock.

A. CHICHESTER
3rd Mate Arthur Chichester of the Mercantile Marine, SS Lux.  Son of Captain and Mrs William Chichester of Braunton. Born in Braunton in 1895. Died 8 February 1917 aged 22 - drowned when SS Lux was torpedoed. Buried in the cemetery on St Martins, Isles of Scilly.

Seaman Arthur James Cook of the Royal Naval Reserve, HMS Duke of Albany. Son of James and Charlotte Cook; husband of Winifred Cook. Born in Appledore in 1881. Died 24 August 1916 aged 35.

Captain and Adjutant Richard Phillipson Dunn-Pattison of "Kilbourie", Braunton,.of the 1st/6th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Robert and Isabella Pattison of Elgin, Scotland. Born in Edinburgh in 1875. Died 8 March 1916 aged 42, He was a Devon JP.

Captain John Graves of the 36th Battalion, Jacob's Horse. He was born in India and married the daughter of the local doctor. Died 18 July 1916 aged 28. No other details yet confirmed.

552951 Private Stanley Hinks of the 8th Battalion, the Canadian Infantry. Son of the late Mr and Mrs J. B.  Hinks of Appledore. Born 11 April 1891/ Died 28 April 1917 aged 26. Brought up in the Seamen's Orphanage at Brixham.

2nd Lieutenant Edward Stanley Hudson of the 10th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of the Rev. E F W Hudson and his wife Constance; brother of Godfrey (see  below). Born  in 1893. Died 13 February 1917 aged 24.

Major Godfrey Hudson of the Machine Gun Infantry Regiment.  Son of the Rev. E F W Hudson and his wife Constance; brother of Edward (see above). Born in 1894. Died 12 April 1918 aged 24. Awarded the Military Cross.

11548/DA Deck Hand in the Mercantile Marine, HM Trawler Endymion. Son of John and Mary Irwin of Heanton Street, Braunton.  Born in Braunton in 1903. Died of illness at Salonika 6 November 1916 aged 14.

205441 Private John Amos Kemp of the 1st/5th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Hetty Kemp of Down Farm, Braunton. Born in Braunton in the September Quarter of 1898. Died 14 April 1918 aged 20.

9593 Sergeant Percival Lovering of the 8th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Edith Lovering. Born in Braunton in 1896. Died 13 September 1916 aged 20. Awarded the Military Medal.

20168 Private Frederick Haslam Manaton of the 9th Battalion, the West Yorkshire Regiment (the Prince of Wales' Own). Son of William and Sarah Manaton of Braunton; brother of George (see below). Born in Braunton in 1891. Died 17 September 1916 aged 25.

4313 Private George Aubrey Manaton of the Inns of Court Training Corps. Son of William and Sarah Manaton of Braunton; brother of Frederick (see above). Born in Braunton in 1893. Died 25 July 1918 aged 25. Buried in the Medthodist Chapelyard.
G.MILTON

It has been very difficult to find any information about this man at all so we reprint the contemporary press report  of his death:

"Mt and Mrs Milton of Park Villas, Braunton have received information that their only son, Corporal Gerald Milton of the Surrey Regiment has been killed in action. Intimation of their son's death reached Mr and Mrs Milton in a letter written by a comrade of the deceased soldier in which it was stated that Cpl Milton was killed on 27 April 1917. The deceased enlisted at the very outbreak of war. His parents have resided in Braunton  only 3 years but the son did not work at Braunton. "

It is said elsewhere that he died carrying out a dangerous mission for which he had volunteered. Believed to be over 30 when he died.

23382 Wireman 2nd Class Albert Joseph Montague, of the Royal Navy, HMS Opal. Husband of Elizabeth Montague. Born in Surbiton, Surrey 12 April 1884. Died 12 January 1918 aged 34. when his ship was lost.

Lieutenant George Raymond Dallas-Moor of the 2nd Battalion, the Hampshire Regiment. Son of William and Eva Moor. Born in Ceylon 22 October 1896. Died of pneumonia 3 November 1918 aged 22.  Awarded the Victoria Cross, the Military Cross and bar.

Henry Poole is not to be found on Braunton's 1915 Roll of Honour or on any other available documents.

Lieutenant John Cecil Butler Prince of the 9th Battalion, the London Regiment. Son of the Rev. J. H. Prince and Mrs Prince of Braunton. Born in Exeter in 1897. Died 27 September 1918 aged 21.

128410 Gunner Ernest Samuel Reed of the Royal Garrison Artillery; formerly1638 of the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Ellen Reed of Church Street, Braunton. Born in Braunton in 1883. Died 1 July 1917 aged 34.

236392 Able seaman Arthur Henry Routcliffe of the Royal Navy, HMS Indefatigable. Son of Arthur and Emma Routcliffe of South Street, Braunton. Born in Braunton 11 Jul 1889. Died at the Battle of Jutland 31 May 1916 aged 27.
