Budleigh Salterton War Memorial

The names of the dead from World War 1 are engraved on the shaft of the cross; World War 2 names, including those of civilians killed, are engraved on the plinth. The Memorial stands at a high point on the sea shore facing out over Lyme Bay.

Lieutenant Harry Royston Bartlett of the Royal Marines, HMS Copra. Son of Brigadier Harry Bartlett CBE and his wife Hilda (née Hodder). Born in Andover in the March Quarter of 1924. He was badly wounded during 1943 and this contributed to his death from illness 1 November 1944 aged 20. Buried in Budleigh Salterton church cemetery.

2325762 Signalman Joseph Harry V. Dale of the 1st Division Signals, the Royal Corps of Signals. Son of Joseph and Ada Amelia Dale (née Buckley). Born in Budleigh Salterton in the March Quarter of 1921. Died at Dunkirk between 27 May 1940 and 2 June 1940 aged 19.

416939 Flight Sergeant Allan Edward Dearlove Davey of the Royal Australian Air Force serving with 90 Squadron, the RAF. Son of Horace Edward Dearlove and Floradora Stephen Mechan Davey; husband of Doris Lilian Davey (née Sedgemore). Born in 1922. Died in an accident 26 February 1944 aged 22.
L. E. DENNYS

Major General Lancelot Ernest Dennys of Special Forces. Born in India, he served at first with the 1st Punjab Regiment of the Indian Army. He won the Military Cross in World War 1 while serving in Egypt with the 54th Sikh Regiment of the Indian Army. His citation (published in the London Gazette 4 October 1919) reads:

 

"At Shejarhar Bridge, on the 20th September 1918, he led his company through an intense cross machine-gun barrage and took his objective with the utmost determination and dash. His personal gallantry and disregard of danger greatly inspired all ranks. Although severely wounded, he endeavoured to crawl and continue commanding, but finally had to be carried back by his orderly."

He went on to serve with 204 Mission as Head of the British Military Mission with the Chinese having been a former Military Attaché in Chungking. 

Major Dennys was the father of Joyce Dennys, Author and Artist, who lived in Budleigh Salterton. He was killed in a plane crash in China on 14 March 1942.

Son of Major George Alfred Penrhys Evans and his wife Cecilia Camilla (née Fortescue); husband of Renee. Born in Dublin in 1903 but came to live in West Hill, Budleigh Salterton. Died 21 May 1944 at Casino. Awarded the DSO.
