BURRINGTON - WORLD WAR 1 MEMORIAL BRASS

A fine brass tablet dedicated to the memory of Burrington men who lost their lives in World War 1 can be found in the Church of All Saints.

The inscription reads:

"To the Glory of God - in memory of the following men who gave their lives for their country in the Great War."

Then follows the list of names:

GILBERT BABBAGE
Private Gilbert Pridham Babbage of the 1st Battalion, the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. Son of James and Elizabeth Babbage of Braysmarsh, Burrington. Born in the June Quarter of 1894 at Burrington. Died 21 August 1918 aged 24.
JOHN BABBAGE
Private John Babbage of the 24th Battalion, the Australian Infantry. Son of James and Elizabeth Babbage and husband of Beatrice McBain Babbage of Aeawata, Victoria, Australia. Born in the December Quarter of 1879 at Burrington. Died 15 March 1917 at the age of 36. He became an Australian citizen.
WALTER BOARD
Private Walter Frederick M. Board of the 1st/6th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Alfred and Sarah Ann Board of Burrington. Born in the March Quarter of 1893 at Burrington. Died 3 February 1916 aged 23.
FRANK CHARD*
Private Francis* Chard of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Emma Chard of Chulmleigh. Born in 1896 in Burrington. Died 28 June 1915 aged 20. His birth registration names him as Francis.
JOHN CHARD
Private John Chard of the 8th Battalion, the Devonshire regiment. Son of John and Emma Chard as above and brother to Francis above. Born in 1893 in Burrington. Died 5 July 1916 aged 22.
ALFRED J. GOVIER
Private Alfred J. Govier of the 852nd Area Employment Coy, the Army Service Corps. Son of John and Dorothy Govier of Burrington.  Date of birth not known. Died 22 March 1918.
HARRY GUARD
Lance Corporal Henry ("Harry") Guard of the 4th Battalion, the Suffolk Regiment. Son of William and Annie Guard of Barnstaple. Born 1891. Died 12 March 1915 aged 24.
A. REGINALD LOVEBAND
Captain Arthur Reginald Loveband of the 1st Battalion, the West Yorkshire Regiment. Son of the Rev. Matthew Thomas Loveband and Mrs Mary Ann Loveband. Born in the December Quarter of 1888 at Warkleigh Rectory. Died 6 December 1914 aged 26.
LIONEL W. LOVEBAND
Sergeant Lionel William Loveband of the 6th Regiment, the Australian Light Horse. Son of the Rev. Matthew and Mary Ann Loveband as above and brother to A. Reginald Loveband. Born in the December Quarter of 1889 at Warkleigh Rectory. Died 27 March 1918. He became an Australian citizen.
LIONEL J. PINCOMBE
Second Lieutenant Lionel John ("John") Pincombe of the 32nd Battalion, the Royal Fusiliers. Son of John and Maria Pincombe of Handford, Burrington. Born in 1896. Died 20 September 1917 aged 21.

WALTER WEBBER
Private Walter Webber of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Lydia Webber of Winswood Farm, Burrington. Born in 1894. Died 16 August 1917 aged 23. Arthur may have been brother to Walter.
