CHAGFORD - ROBERT THORN'S PHOTO ALBUM

Robert Hole Thorn was Chagford's Post Master. He acquired a good-quality camera at some point and used it to take a number of excellent local photographs. These he composed into an Album which he had published and nicely bound. This gave him a unique product to sell in his post office - sadly though, he did not add a date to his publication - presumably because he did not want his product to date. Using Kelly's Directories for 1893 and 1902 and the 1901 census, we've arrived at the former date, partly because of supporting evidence gained from other names on shop fronts but mainly because of the absence of any motorised traffic.
