When the 1881 Census was taken, John Walling Brooks, the proprietor of Wallingbrook School was 40 years old. At that time, his school was established in the Square at Chulmleigh and he and his wife Amelia lived on the premises with their children - Annie, Bessie, William, Amelia, Sarah, Caroline and Florence. Also living on the premises were Julia Purkis (28) a schoolmistress, Edward Rundle (25) an assistant master and Eliezer Willis (15), a pupil teacher. A nephew and niece named William and Florence Mary Brooks were boarding with the family at this time and William is listed with the other pupils below. Florence is listed separately at the end.
