THE HABEL BODIED MEN OF CLYST HONITON 

in the Muster Roll of 1569

 

If the King required their services, these men had to drop everything and muster immediately under the leadership of the Presenters (leading men of the area). No elderly or unfit men were listed here and those who could fight had to provide their own weapon to fight with, as listed,  out of their own pockets.

The Presenters named were

"Who do presente as the parish  of Woodberrie afforesaide and that the inhabitants have their furniture ( i.e.weapons)"

PIKEMEN

(A long wooden stick with a heavy pointed metal tip welded on by the local blacksmith

Their task was to defend the musketeers while they reloaded.)

BILLMEN

( A sharp billhook as used to cut hay or corn in the fields. The men were

supposed to hack away at any comers and disable them if possible.)
