J. SALTER
26100 Private James Salter of the 7th Battalion, the Somerset Light Infantry. Son of James and Sally Salter of Neopardy, Crediton Hall. Born in Crediton in the June Quarter of 1890. Died 14 December 1916 aged 26.
G. SANDERS
George Sanders was born in Crediton in the December Quarter of 1886. The 1901 census show him working as a servant at a farm at Crediton Hall. Nothing more is yet confirmed.
J. SANDERS
Third Mate John Richard Sanders of the Mercantile Marine, SS Hollington. Son of John and the late Ellen Sanders of Westacott Farm, Crediton. Born in Whitestone, Crediton in the December Quarter of 1890. Died 2 June 1917 aged 26.
R. SEARLE
C/9216 Rifleman Reginald Arthur Searle of the 20th Battalion, the King's Royal Rifle Corps. Son of Walter and Alice Searle. Born in Crediton  in the December Quarter of 1896. Died 8 July 1916 aged 19.
C. SELLEY
9178 Lance Sergeant Charles John Selley of the 8th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Brother of Mrs Maude Hawke of Higher Lodge, Shobrooke Park, Crediton. Born in Dawlish in the December Quarter of 1890 but came to live in Crediton. Died 2 April 1917 aged 27.

Said to be Frederick George Setter of the Canadian Infantry (East Koolney Regiment) Not commemorated on the Canadian Virtual War Memorial.
J. SETTER
John Setter (registered at birth as Samuel John Setter) was born in Crediton in the June Quarter of 1886. He was  the son of John and Harriet Setter of Turner's Cottage, Moorlake, Crediton and was always known as "John". No military information as yet confirmed.
S. SETTER

27890 Private Sidney John Setter of "D" Company, 8th Battalion, the Somerset Light Infantry. Son of Bertha A Setter (née Cann) of Fir Cottage, Forlease Road, Maidenhead, Berks and the late John Setter (his father and mother were both born in Crediton). Born in Clapham, London in 1898.  Died 15 July 1917 aged 19.

359 Private Percy Edwin Shapland of the Australian Infantry Force. Son of Edwin and Louisa  Shapland (née Reed) of Crediton; (his father had a butcher's business in the High Street); brother of Reginald (see below). Born in Crediton in the September Quarter of 1886. Died 4 May 1917 aged 29.

968 Private Reginald Reed Shapland of the Australian Infantry Force. Son of Edwin and Louisa  Shapland (née Reed) of Crediton; (his father had a butcher's business in the High Street); brother of Percy (see above). Born in Crediton in the September Quarter of 1894. Died 4 May 1917 aged 22.

Percy John Shipman of the 3rd Battalion, the Wireless Squadron. Son of John and Mary Ann Shipman of Crediton. Born in Crediton in the March Quarter of 1894. Died in India 29 September 1919 aged 26.
A. SKINNER
2342 Private Alfred G. Skinner of the 4th Battalion, the Gloucestershire Regiment. Son of  Frank and Alice Skinner of 27 The Green, Crediton. Born in Cadeleigh 1891. Died 15 October 1915 aged 24.
J. SMITH
James Smith was the son of John and Lucy Smith of Stopefield, Crediton Hall. He was born in Crediton in 1898. No military information as yet confirmed.
J. SNELL
Originally PLY/8412 transferred in 1910 from Plymouth to Chatham and became CH/16578 Private John Snell of the Royal Marine Light Infantry, Chatham Battalion. Son of John and Emma Snell of Crediton; husband of Alice Snell of Deal, Kent. Born in Crediton in 1876 . Died 5 October 1914 aged 38.
H. SNELL
69218 Private Henry James Snell of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Emma Snell of High Street, Crediton; husband of Sarah Ann Snell of 67 High Street, Crediton. Born in Crediton in the March Quarter of 1890. Died 24 November 1918 aged 30.

204255 Private George Spear formerly of the Devonshire Regiment, transferred to the 7th Battalion, the Somerset Light Infantry. Son of John and Emily Keturah Spear of Higher Woolbrook, Sidmouth. Born in Crediton in the September Quarter of 1898. Died 12 September 1917 aged 19.

Commander Alexander Young Mainwaring Crawshay Spearman of the Collingwood Battalion of the Royal Naval Division. Son of Alexander Young Spearman; husband of Jessie Aubrey Loch (formerly Spearman, née Coker) of Parks, Crediton. Born in Marylebone, London, in the June Quarter of 1862. Died 4 June 1915 aged 52.

G/8040 Private Alfred Sprague of the 7th Battalion, the Queens (Royal West Surrey) Regiment. Son of James and Elizabeth Sprague (his father was a boot maker with premises in the High Street, Crediton); brother of James (see below). Born in Crediton in the March Quarter of 1887. Died 28 September 1916 aged 29.

202654 Private James Sprague of the 6th Battalion  Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. Son of James and Elizabeth Sprague (his father was a boot maker with premises in the High Street, Crediton); brother of Alfred (see above). Born in Crediton in the September Quarter  of 1879.

249398 Lance Corporal Arthur William Staddon of  the Royal Engineers, the Railway Battalion. Son of William and Maria Staddon (his father worked for the Railway Company at Crediton). Born in Templecombe, Somerset, in the March Quarter of 1893. Died 22 August 1917 aged 24.
H. STEMSON
102073 Private (Leslie) Harold Stemson of the 3rd Battalion, the Machine Gun Corps, Infantry. Son of Joseph and Emma Stemson, of 59, Park St., Crediton, Devon. Born in Crediton in the September Quarter of 1895. Died of influenza in France 26 November 1918 aged 23.

15494 Private Frank Stentiford of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of James and Lucy Stentiford, of Fore St., Morchard Bishop; husband of Florence Stentiford, of 8, Stanbury Place, High St., Crediton. Born in Morchard Bishop in the March Quarter of 1888. Died 10 August 1918 aged 27. Also commemorated on the Morchard Bishop War Memorial.

11577 Gunner Frederick Stiff of the 105th Battery, the 22nd Brigade of the Royal Field Artillery. Son of James and Laura Stiff; husband of Minnie Casy Compton (formerly Stiff and formerly of 13 Hookway, Crediton) . Died 21 October 1914.

Stoker 1st Class Frederick James Strong of the Royal Navy, HMS Good Hope. Son of James Strong and the late Emma Strong; brother of Bertie (See below). Born in Crediton 4 June 1889. Died 1 November 1914 aged 25.

447963 Private Bertie John Strong of the Alberta Regiment, the Canadian Light Infantry. Son of James Strong and the late Emma Strong of Crediton; brother of Fred (see above). Born in Crediton in the June Quarter of 1885  Died 19 November 1916 aged 31.
J. SUTTON
2129657 Lance Corporal James Sutton of the Manitoba Regiment, the Canadian Infantry. Son of John and Emma Rose Sutton of 2 Buller Square, Tolleys, Crediton. Born in Crediton 11 March 1895. Died of pneumonia 4 May 1918 aged 23.
C. SYMES
Captain  Charles W. Symes of the 2nd Battalion (formerly 4th Battalion), the Dorsetshire Regiment. Son of the late W. H. Symes of the Manor House, Crediton and his wife Mary (née Jessop). Born in Crediton in the September Quarter of 1885. Died 9 October 1915  in Mesopotamia while serving with the Indian Expeditionary Force aged 30.
E. TOMPKINS
241933  Lance Corporal Edmund Edward Tompkins of the 2nd/8th Battalion, the Worcestershire Regiment. Son of Edmund and Mary Tompkins of 2 Grove Terrace, Crediton (his father taught at the Queen Elizabeth School). Born in Forest Gate, London in the June Quarter of 1886. Died 8 January 1918 aged 31.
L. TOTHILL
278364 Private Lewis George Tothill of the Royal Flying Corps Training School at Halton. Son of John George and Hannah Tothill of 12 Cherry Gardens, Park Street, Crediton. Born in Crediton in the September Quarter of 1900. Died of influenza at home 23 Augusts 1918 aged 18. Buried in Holy Cross churchyard, Crediton.
F. TREMLETT
5195 Private Fred Tremlett of the 1st/3rd Battalion, the City of London Regiment. Son of the late Philip Tremlett and Sarah Ann Tremlett. Born in Crediton in the December Quarter of 1884. Died 28 September 1916 aged 31.
E. TREMLETT
Lieutenant Elias Tremlett DSO, attached to 208 Company of the Machine Gun Corps, formerly  of the 9th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of  William and Grace Tremlett of Hollacombe, Crediton. Born in Crediton in the June Quarter of 1890. Died 23 May 1917 aged 27.
S. TUCKER
8/40247 Private Sidney James Tucker of the 53rd YS Battalion (Young Soldiers), the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Charles Henry and Susan Jane Tucker of 204 Dean Street, Crediton. Born in Crediton in the December Quarter of 1900. Died 13 December 1918 aged 18. Buried in Holy Cross churchyard, Crediton.
G. TURNER
Believed to  be George Turner,  grandson of Samuel and Elizabeth Turner; son of Elizabeth Turner. Born in Cheriton Fitzpaine in 1887; went to work at Rock at Crediton Hall. His military record is not yet confirmed.
M. TURNER
7293 Company Sergeant Major Mark Turner of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Lewis and Grace Turner of Crediton. Born in Crediton in the June Quarter of 1886. Died 30 June 1916 aged 30.
H. VENN
1015642 Private Hubert John Venn of the Eastern Ontario Regiment, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. Son of John and Hester Venn of 117 High Street, Crediton ( his father had a drapery business in the High Street).  Born in Crediton in the December Quarter of 1875. Died 10 April 1918 aged 43.
