*If a man's name appears more than once, it will be because he has undertaken more than one contract of service. The details may look identical but he will have been issued with a fresh Service number at each signing-on.

The first contract was usually for 22 years. Many young men gave a birth date which differed by 2 years from the true one so that they only served 20 years. It was impossible at the time to check on this.
