1st WESSEX  FIELD AMBULANCE

S. BRADFORD
"Private Samuel Bradford was born in Exeter in 1871. He was the husband of Charlotte and father of five children. He died from  heart failure in 1919 but has a CWGC headstone in Exeter's Higher Cemetery."
E. MEDLAND
"Private Ernest Medland, son of Samuel and  Hannah Medland. Born in Okehampton in 1886, he was a member of 1st Wessex Field Ambulance but died in the UK before he could embark with the Unit to France on 1 November 1914. "

24th FIELD AMBULANCE

W. GRANGER
"Private William Granger. Born in Liverpool in 1899, moved to Bristol before 1911 with parents Edgar and Esther Granger. Embodied in 1917 and posted to the 24th in France 27 June 1918. Killed in Action 14 October 1918. I have no idea why he was left off the list apart from he may have been one of 40 bearers who were "lent" to the 26th a few days before his death."
W. J. JEFFREY
"Private Walter James Jeffrey (Regimental numbers 2230 and 457375). Another possible for R.H Jeffery. He enlisted into 2/1st WFA and went to France with them in 1916 but sprained his ankle and was Returned To Unit  UK. He was posted back to join the 24th in 1917 and was killed in action 26 December 1917 whilst carrying a wounded man down the line."
A. S. OSBOURNE
"1047 Private Allen Samuel Osbourne embarked with the 24th for France in 1914. Returned to Unit UK suffering from TB. He was discharged 19 June 1917 but died in a sanatorium 10 days later. He is commemorated on the screen wall in Wandsworth Crematorium although born in Devon in 1893. His parents were Mark and Emily Osbourne."
O.V.PULLEN
"He embarked with the 24th in 1914 but he fell ill at the end of May 1915 and died in Oxford 24 July 1915."   1882 Private (Oscar) Valentine Pullen of the 1st Wessex Field Ambulance, the Royal Army Medical Corps. Son of Edith and the late Robert Pullen of 116 Park Road, Polsloe Park, Heavitree, Exeter. Born in Exeter in the June Quarter of 1895. Died of disease in Oxford Hospital 24 July 1915 aged 20. Buried in Exeter Higher Cemetery.
C. REED
"Private Charles Reed. He was born in Bristol in 1881 and was the husband of Margaret Reed with whom he had a daughter. This man was not fit for service and had been passed for Home Service Only with the RFA, the Labour Corps and then the Irish Rifles. He was posted to the 24th in France in February 1918 but Returned to Unit UK at the end of the year. He died in a Hereford Hospital from heart failure due to Flu 13 January 1919."
F. WHITCHER
"2034 Private Frederick Whitcher. Son of Harry and Isabella Whitcher. Born in Norfolk in 1891, he moved to Exeter after 1911; embarked for France with the 24th in 1914 but returned to unit in the UK and died in Cambridge 22 May 1915 aged 23."

2/1st WESSEX FIELD AMBULANCE

W.F.LEAMAN
"1755 Driver William Frederick Leaman. Son of Frederick and Elizabeth Leaman. Born in Littleham in 1895.  Died from rheumatic fever in No 3 Military Hospital, Exeter 30 September 1915."
B. J. PARSONS
"457332 Private Bertie James Parsons served with the 2/1st in France. Son of James and Elizabeth Parsons. Born in Old Cleeve in 1889. Died 13 August 1920 in Bath but the CWGC records that he was still part of 2nd/1st."
