"Doris Page was the best friend of my grandmother*, Iva  Holme (née Basden). She died in February 1917 while working in the VAD Hospital in Exmouth. She contracted measles then pneumonia before her early death. In appreciation of her VAD work she was given a military style funeral before being buried in Littleham."

Believed to have been born in Plymouth in 1898 and aged 20 when she died.

*Iva Holme died in the war and is listed on this site with the casualties of the bombing of Exmouth.

J 29551 Able Seaman Percy William Searle of the Royal Navy, HMS Pheasant. Son of Charles and Annie Searle of 5 Fore Street. Born in Exmouth 22 March 1896. He was one of the tiny number of survivors of the sinking of HMS Formidable on 1 January 1915 who came ashore at Lyme Regis. He was to die later in the war, on 1 March 1917 when HMS Pheasant was sunk by a mine off Orkney.

For reasons unknown, this family changed its surname. At birth, Julius was called Snow - before he entered the army it was changed to Larow.

27582 Sergeant Jesse Woolger of 52 Battery, the Royal Field Artillery. Son of Sergeant Major Jesse Woolger of the Scottish Rifles and his wife Lucy; brother of William Woolger (see below).  Born in Tynemouth in the December Quarter of 1884.  Died 26 August 1914 aged 30.

7597 Company Sergeant Major William Joseph Woolger of the 1st Battalion, the East Surrey Regiment.  Son of Sergeant Major Jesse Woolger of the Scottish Rifles and his wife Lucy; brother of Jesse Woolger (see above). Born in Elham, Kent in the June Quarter of 1883. Died 20 September 1914 aged 31.

Petty Officer 2nd Class John Yeo of the RFR, serving on HMS Goliath. Son of John (father of John Louis Yeo) and Lizzie Yeo; husband of Mabel (see above). Born in Littleham 2 January 1872. Died 13 May 1915 aged 43.
