P. C. H. ACTON
P/JX 172597 Able Seaman Percival Charles Herbert Acton of the Royal Navy, HMS Hood. Son of Charles and Alice Acton. Born in Steyning, Sussex  in the June Quarter of 1917. Died May 24 1941 aged 24 when HMS Hood was sunk with the loss of 1415 men - the biggest ship loss of WW2.
W. BARCLAY

Private William Barclay of the Army Air Corps, the 21st Independent Parachute Company. Born in London 9 March 1922, he became a key player in the Battle at Arnhem, assuming command after all other officers and NCOs in his unit had been killed on 23 September 1944 for which he was awarded the MM. His rise in the army was meteoric - by the end of the war he was a Captain  in the 1st Battalion, the South Staffordshire Regiment.

He did not die in WW2 however - he died in January 2013, aged 87, with the rank of Lt-Colonel, known to all as "Bill Barclay".

1921504 Lance Sergeant William George Bedwell of 805 Road Construction Coy, the Royal Engineers. Son of Cecil and Lily Bedwell; husband of Fay Bedwell. Born in Exmouth in the December Quarter of 1908. Died in an accident in Northern Ireland 31 December 1940. Buried in the churchyard at Withycombe.

1987235 Lance Corporal Leslie Ronald Bowmer of HQ Fortress Coy, the Royal Engineers. Son of William and Mabel Bowmer of Exmouth. Born in Uxbridge in the September Quarter of 1918. Died 12 September 1944 aged 26 on board a Japanese vessel as a result of ill treatment while a Prisoner of War.
