G. FORTESCUE
Captain Grenville Fortescue of the 11th Battalion, the Rifle Brigade; formerly in the 4th Battalion. Son of Capt. the Hon. Arthur Fortescue (Coldstream Guards) and of Mrs. Gertrude Fortescue (nee Fane); husband of Adelaide Fortescue, of Thorney Wood, Christchurch, Hants. His father was the third son of Hugh Fortescue, the 3rd Earl. Born 15 March 1887. Died 4 September 1915 aged 28.
H. PALMER

Henry Palmer's Boer War Record:  

4823 Private Henry Palmer  enlisted in  the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment at the age of 17. Son of John and Ann Palmer of Church Hill , Winkleigh. Born in the parish of Winkleigh in the March Quarter of 1880.  Wounded in the assault on Ladysmith 6 Jan 1900 at the age of 20. Appears in the 1901 census back home with his parents aged 21 and described as an "army pensioner". He seems to have fought bravely and won medals  for Elandslagte and the Ladysmith. Sadly, on his discharge (wounded in action) he told the Sergeant that he had already lost his medals!  

Henry Palmer's 1st War Record:  

When war came again, Henry Palmer volunteered once more. He is described on the Filleigh Memorial as having died  on 10 October 1914 while serving as a Lance Corporal with the 1st RD C, that is,  the 1st Battalion of the Royal Devon Cavalry as the Yeomanry were known in the very early days of the war. The Filleigh Memorial records that he died, aged 35, at Ypres at the start of the offensive there.

18442 Private George Steed of the 5th Battalion, 1st Grenadier Guards. Son of William and Emma Jane Steed, Born in 1893. Died 21 October 1918 aged 25. Buried in the churchyard at St. Marychurch, Torquay
T. STONE
454 Sergeant Thomas John Stone of the 1st/1st Battalion, the Royal North Devon Hussars. Son of James and Sophia Stone of West Buckland. Born in 1891. Died in Alexandria 28 October 1915 aged 24.
W. BLIGHT
11308 Lance Corporal William Heal Blight of the 9th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Frederick and Caroline Blight of Filleigh; brother of Frederick (See below) and Walter (see below).  Born in Buckland Brewer in the September Quarter of 1889. Died 2 April 1917 aged 28.
F. BRIGHT
12586 Private Frederick Blight of the 8th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Frederick and Caroline Blight of Filleigh; brother of William (see above) and Walter (see below) Born in Buckland Brewer in the March Quarter of 1891. Died 25 September 1915 aged 24. 
W. BLIGHT
265032 Private Walter Blight of the 1st/6th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Frederick and Caroline Blight of Filleigh; brother of William and Frederick (see above). Born in Buckland Brewer in the June Quarter of 1897.
F. BENDLE
2049 Private Frederick Bendle 1/6th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment (Territorials). Son of Henry and Dinah Bendle.  Born in South Molton in 1897. Died 8 March 1916 aged 19.
A. PUGSLEY
25661 Private Arthur Pugsley of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Richard and Sarah Pugsley. Born in West Buckland in 1889.  Died 20 December 1916 aged 27.
A. GREGORY
1675 Private Arthur Sidney Pugsley of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Sydney and Emily Gregory of Filleigh. Born in Filleigh in 1894. Died 20 December 1916 aged 22.
