THE STORM OF 25 JANUARY 1990 |
 |
St. John the Baptist Tower and Spire, Hatherleigh
©Richard J. Brine |
Look closer at the photograph above and you may be able to detect a mismatch between the tower of this church and its steeple. Above the ancient stones of the tower, rises a modern but faithful copy of the steeple that stood above it for centuries - that is until 25 January 1990. On that day, at the height of a vicious January storm, the ancient steeple literally toppled over, crashing down into the aisle of the church below. |

Some years before this event, the Deanery had re-assessed the Church and raised it to a higher category of architectural interest; consequently, the insurance on the building had been increased. Assessors soon arrived on the scene and reconstruction began. Even so, it was Christmas 1991 before it was able to reopen for services. |
