Volunteer John Dingle Rogers of the 17th Devonport Dockyard Home Guard Battalion. Son of the late Edwin and Alice Rogers of Ivybridge. Born in Ivybridge in the June Quarter of 1920. Died at HM Dockyard 22 April 1941 aged 21. Buried in Ivybridge Cemetery.
D.N.RYALLS
Surgeon Lt-Commander David Noel Ryalls of the RNVR, HMS Exeter. Son of Albert and Edith Ryalls. Born in Sheffield in 1907. Died as a PoW on a Japanese ship on 24 June 1944 aged 37 after the Exeter had been  sunk by the Japanese.
W.A.RYAN

Surgeon Lt-Commander W. A. Ryan of the Royal Navy, HMS Ladybird.

 

On May 12th 1941 Ladybird came under German dive bombing attacks during an air raid on Tobruk harbour. She sustained major damage and sank but was only partly submerged due to the depth of water in the harbour. This meant that not all of the crew lost their lives. Ladybird was struck by 6 shells which killed a sickberth attendant and the surgeon-commander. It is believed that two more members of the crew died at the scene.

PLY/X 1056 Corporal Edward Ernest Scantlebury of the Royal Marines, serving on HMS Prince of Wales. Son of Ernest and Irene Scantlebury; husband of Dorothy Scantlebury of Idle, Yorkshire. Born in 1916. Died 12 September 1944 aged 28. Commemorated on Plymouth's Naval Memorial.

Flight-Lt. James Murray Strickland of the RAF, 130 Squadron.  Son of James and ELizabeth Strickland; brother of John (see below); husband of Betty Strickland of Ivybridge. Born in Ivybridge in 1919. Died 14 August 1941 aged 22. Commemorated on Truro War Memorial as well. Buried in Ivybridge Cemetery. Awarded the DFC.

125585 Flying Officer John Strickland of the RAF Volunteer Reserve, 261 Squadron. Son of James and Elizabeth Strickland. Born in Ivybridge in 1922. Died 23 October 1943 aged 21.

D/K 32894 Petty Officer Stoker Fred Toms of the R.N.V.R, HMS Itchen. Son of Fred and Selena Toms. Born in Modbury 18 December 1897. Died 23 September 1943 aged 46.

85035 Flight-Lt. Eric Vincent Turner of the RAF. Son of James and Florence Turner; husband of Mary Turner of Ivybridge. Born in Marylebone, London in the September Quarter of 1901. Died 26 February 1944 aged 42. Commemorated on the Plymouth RAF Memorial.

903031 Warrant Officer James Robert Yabsley of the RAF Volunteer Reserve. Son of James and Susan Yabsley of Ivybridge; husband of Mary Yabsley. Born in Ivybridge in the December Quarter of 1916. Died of wounds in Ivybridge 12 November 1946 aged 30. Buried in Ivybridge Cemetery.
