KENTISBURY 1914 - 1918 ROLL OF HONOUR

Kentisbury Roll of Honour 1914 - 1918

H.BUSHEN
Private Harry Bushen of the 1st Battalion, the Hampshire Regiment; formerly 279000 of the Duke of Cornwall's Regiment. Husband of Mary Ellen Bushen. Born in Kentisbury in the March Quarter of 1880. Died 1 November 1918 aged 38.
F.CHARLEY
345532 Lance Corporal Fredrick George Charley of the 16th (Royal Devon and Royal North Devon Yeomanry) Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Mary Jane Charley of Kentisbury; husband of Caroline Charley of Nutcombe farm, Combe Martin. Born in Kentisbury in 1895. Died 3 December 1917 aged 22.
S.F.DELVE
203223 Private Sydney Fred Delve of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment.  Son of Alfred and mary Delve. Born in Sherwell, Nr, Barnstaple but lived in Great Driffield, Yorkshire. Died 4 October 1917 aged 21.
W.HARDING
MS/ 2456 Private William Harding of the Royal Army Service Corps. Son of William and Ellen Harding. Born in Kentisbury in 1888. Like most injured men of WW1, William was simply sent back to his family to care for after the war ended. His record shows a dismal story: an error had been made which confused him as a 1914 volunteer with a conscript in 1916. The 1914 star awarded to him was ordered to be returned and melted down. On 27 July 1931, there was some correspondence between him and the military (perhaps a request for some financial support?) - less than 6 months later he was dead at the age of 44.
V.LATHAM
81679 Private Victor Alfred Latham (or Alfred Victor Latham as he was known ) of the Machine Gun Corps. Son of William and Mary Latham; husband of Annie Latham of Coombe Martin. Born in Kentisbury in 1897. Died 4 February 1920. Buried in East Down Churchyard.
G.O.OPENSHAW
Captain Geoffrey Omerod Openshaw of the Royal Army Service Corps. Son of Oliver and Maud Openshaw of Kentisbury Grange; husband of Caroline Openshaw of Topsham.
G.SMALLRIDGE
203617 Private George Smallridge of the 1st/5th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Mary Ann Smallridge. Born in Kentisbury in 1898. Died 20 July 1918 aged 20.
