J.CATER M.C

Captain John White Cater of the 19th Battalion, the 44th Middlesex Rifle Volunteer Corps. Son of Charles and Mary Cater; husband of Violet Cater. Born in Harrow, Middlesex in 1882. Died as a prisoner of war  9 July 1917 aged 36. Awarded the Military Cross.

From the London Gazette 18 July 1917

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. The success of the attack was largely due to his inititiave and skilful leading. He showed the utmost energy and coolness in organising his men under heavy fire after each advance. He set a fine example throughout.

19302 Private Richard Colwill of the 5th Battalion, the Dorsetshire  Regiment. Son of Thomas and Elizabeth Colwill. Born in Hartland in 1893 but lived in Little Torrington. Died 27 September 1918 aged 25.
T.FAIRCHILD
23107 Corporal Thomas Fairchild of the 5th Battalion of the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Son of Mrs Fairchild of Little Torrington; husband of Evelyn Fairchild; Nephew of Richard and Minnnie Fairchild who assisted in his upbringing. Born in 1890 in Millbrook, Cornwall. Died 2 September 1918 aged 26.
H.LAWRENCE
15627 Private Herbert James Lawrence of the 3rd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of George and Emma Lawrence; Brother of Stanley and Percy  (see below). Born in Little Torrington in 1891. Died at home 30 December 1916 aged 24. Buried in Little Torrington Churchyard.
S.LAWRENCE
R/1000 Able Seaman Stanley William Lawrence of the Royal Navy Division, HMS Drake. Son of  George and Emma Lawrence of Ashton Cottage, Little Torrington; brother of Herbert (see above) and Percy (see below). Born in Little Torrington in the September Quarter of 1893. Died 3 September 1918 aged 35. Buried in the cemetery at Vis-en-Artois.

345723 Trooper Harold Percival Lawrence of the Royal Devon and Royal North Devon Yeomanry, of the Devonshire Regiment. Son of George and Emma Lawrence; brother of Stanley and Percy (see above). Born in Little Torrington in the March Quarter of 1895. Died 2 September 1918 aged 23.

987 Sergeant Henry Thomas Lawrence of the 1st/6th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Thomas and Bessie Lawrence. Born in Langtree in 1893. Died 8 March 1916 aged 23.

48383 Sapper Harry Rooke of the 93rd Field Coy, the Royal Engineers. Husband of Florence Rooke of 3 Potacre Steet, Torrington. Born in Little Torrington in 1887. Died 8 March 1916 aged 29.
R.ROOKE
26062 Private Ronald Philip Rooke of the 2nd/4th Battalion, the Ox and Bucks Light Infantry. Son of William and Emma Rooke; husband of Annie of Tadiport. Born in Little Torrington in the September Quarter of 1892. Died 21 March 1918, aged 25.
W.SMALE
10708 Private William Smale of the 8th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Kate Smale; husband of Caroline Smale. Born in Holsworthy in the June Quarter of 1876 and lived in Beaworthy. Died 25 September 1915 aged 39. He was a trained teacher.
G.STONEMAN
15t737 Private George Stoneman of the 8th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of James and Harriet Stoneman. Born in Buckland Brewer in 1885. Died 4 September 1916 aged 31.
