9431 Lance Corporal Charles Henry Berry of the 3rd Battalion, the Worcestershire Regiment. Son of Mary Barry of Chatham and the late Charles Berry; husband of Mary Elizabeth  Berry (née Paddon) of Lydford. Born in Chatham in the June Quarter of 1886. Died 24 August 1916 aged 30.
M CLARK
Believed to be Mansel Clark, son of Emily and the late James Clark. Born in Exeter in the March Quarter of 1891. His widowed mother lived in Lydford. His military record is not yet known.
F W FRY
48228 Private Frank Wilfred Fry of the 11th Battalion, the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry; he was transferred to the 53rd Training Reserve Battalion of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Son of Frank and Evalina Fry of Church Cottage, Lydford. Born in Lydford in the December Quarter of 1899. Died 24 March 1918 aged 18. Buried in the churchyard of St Petrock's, Lydford.

21649 Private Richard Henry Hobbs of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Mary Hobbs of Moorshop, Tavistock; husband of Louisa Mary Hobbs of Lydford Station, Bridestowe. Born in Lydford in the June Quarter of 1889. Died 7 September 1916 aged 27.

9300 Private William Henry Daw of the 3rd Battalion, the Coldstream Guards. Parents not yet confirmed. Born in the Tavistock area in the March Quarter of 1893. Died 6 February 1915 aged 22.
A R HUGGINS
167 Sergeant Archibald Roger Huggins of the 1st Battalion the Royal North Devon Hussars. Son of Roger and Mary Ann Cory Huggins; husband of Lily Huggins (née Wonnacott) of South Zeal, Okehampton. Born in Lydford in the December Quarter of 1886, Died 27 October 1915 aged 29.

43789 Private George Henry Taylor Lake of the 2nd Battalion, the Warkwickshire Regiment. Son of Frederick Taylor and Lucy Lake of Tor Cottage, Lydford Station. Born in Marystowe in the September Quarter of 1897. Died 4 November 1918 aged 21.

152082 Petty Officer Stoker George Metters of the Royal Navy, HMS Vivid. Son of William and Elizabeth Metters; husband of Mabel Metters. Born 6 January 1870. Died 18 March 1916 aged 46. Buried in Lydford Churchyard.

19309 Private Richard John Petherick of the 5th Battalion, the Dorsetshire Regiment. Son of Herbert and the late Harriet Ann Petherick (née Phillips). Born in Lydford in 1895. Died 24 November 1916 aged 21.
R R TURNER
2nd Lieutenant Richard Radford Turner of the 3rd Battalion, the Royal Sussex Regiment. Son of Richard (late Vicar of Barnstaple) and Mrs L Turner of 2 St Germans, Exeter. Born in Bickleigh, Plympton in the June Quarter of 1896. Died 3 February 1917 aged 20.

45821 Private Samuel Voysey of the 60th Battalion, the Canadian Infantry. Son of George and Susan Voysey. Born in Modbury in the March Quarter of 1875. Died 18 September 1916 aged 41. He was a Canadian citizen.

R/4500 Sergeant Edward John Whitford of the 13th Battalion, the King's Royal Rifle Corps. Son of Thomas and Elizabeth Whitford. Born in Sherborne , Gloucestershire, in the September Quarter of 1879. Died 11 April 1917 aged 38. Lived in Lydford.
J STEPHENS
Believed to be James Stephens, son of James and Mary Ann Stephens of Lydford who was born in 1880. Details of his military career are not yet confirmed.

1939 - 1945

14678965 Private Leslie Arthur John Bickle of the 4th Battalion, the Somerset Light Infantry. Son of Albert and Margaret Susan Bickle of Lydford; brother of Sylvia (see below). Born in Lydford in the December Quarter of 1925. Died 9 October 1944 aged 18.
R H GILLETT
EC/1166 Major Richard Hamilton Gillett of the 10th Baluch Regiment attached to the Indian Parachute Regiment. Son of Aubrey Scott and Margaret Elsie Gillett (née Potts) of Chitton, Somerset. Born in Yorkshire in the March Quarter of 1917. Died 26 March 1944 aged 24. He  had Indian Nationality.
P W HERBERT
82676 Flying Officer (Pilot) Philip William Herbert of the RAF VR, the  Photographic Reconnaissance Unit. Son of Air Commodore Philip Herbert and Gwendoline Hughes Herbert; brother of Richard and Gerald (see below). Born in Alverstoke, Hants, in the September Quarter of 1915. Died 26 January 1942 aged 26.

W/340412 Private Sylvia Ecalina Mary Bickle of the ATS. Daughter of Albert and Margaret Susan Bickle; sister of Leslie (see above). Born in Lydford in the June Quarter of 1928. Died 11 September 1947 aged 19. Buried in the churchyard of St Petrock, Lydford.

33425 Flying Officer (Pilot) Richard Vivian Herbert of the RAF, 211 Squadron. Son of Air Commodore Philip Lee William Herbert and his wife Gwendoline Hughes Herbert; brother of Philip (see above) and Gerald (see below). Born in Eton, Bucks, in the June Quarter of 1919. Died 13 April 1941 aged 21.

116456 Flying Officer (Pilot) Gerald Bevill Herbert of the RAF VR, 158 Squadron. Son of Air Commodore Philip Lee William Herbert and his wife Gwendoline Hughes Herbert; brother of Philip  and Richard (see above). Born in Kensington, London in the March Quarter of 1923. Died 14 February 1943 aged 20. Killed when his Halifax plane crashed on take-off.

Sailor Alfred Ernest Stanbury of the Merchant Navy, SS Alamo (London) Son of George and Ada Stanbury of Eastbourne. Born in 1924. Died 8 April 1941 aged 17.
P C BOWLES
Believed to be 307391 2nd Lieutenant Peter C Bowles of the Sherwood Foresters who died in Burma 20 March 1944.

 

THE FALKLANDS WAR 1982

N. TAYLOR
Lieutenant Nicholas ("Nick") Taylor, helicopter pilot; deployed with 800 Squadron, HMS Hermes. He was the first Fleet Air Arm pilot to be killed in the Falklands Campaign. Born in 1950. Shot down and killed 4 May 1982 aged 32; his body was discovered still strapped to his ejector seat by Argentine soldiers who gave him a funeral with full military honours.

 

THE IRAQ WAR 2003

A J KELLY
Private Andrew Kelly of the 3rd Battalion, the Parachute Regiment. Son of Robert Kelly and his former wife Helen; lived with his mother and her husband Nick Yallop.in Lydford. Born in 1985. Died 6 May 2003 aged 18 as the result of a shooting accident in Basra.
