WORTHINGTON PENNICOTT -  DCM

 

The award of the Distinguished Conduct Medal to 142369 Battery Sergeant Major Worthington Herbert Pennicott of the Royal Garrison Artillery was gazetted 4 November 1918.

 

Worthington  Pennicott was the son of Bertram and Sarah Pennicott of Lynton and was born in Lynmouth in the September Quarter of 1888. He married Winifred Northcott in 1916 and became the father of Basil Pennicott, killed in World War 2, whose name appears on Lynton's War Memorial.

 

From The London Gazette

4 November 1918:

"For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when two men of a working party were seriously wounded. He went to their assistance under intense shell fire, attended to them in the open, and remained with them until the shelling stopped. Eventually he succeeded in getting both man away to a place of safety."
