NAMES OMITTED FROM THE NEWTON ABBOT 1939 - 1945 WAR MEMORIAL

It seems sad that so many men's names do not appear on the main war memorial but there are many and various  reasons why this has come about.

The Royal Navy requisitioned the old Workhouse in East Street  and converted it into an Auxiliary Hospital at the outset of WW2. Many of the men who died there were strangers to the town who died far from their families and homes.

It is possible that the  paperwork which surrounded the collection of other, more local, names still lurks behind some kitchen clocks in the town . People don't like filling oout official - looking forms - families do die out or move far away - wives remarry and people are forgotten - even those who die in wars.

This list is not complete - we shall go on looking out for those who are missing and add them as we find them.
