The bombing of St Joseph's home

These are Plymouth's Little Sisters of the Poor, salvaging what they could from St Joseph's Home on 1 May 1941, the day after they had been bombed

.

In 1941, there was no National Health Service in the UK to care for you if you were old and terminally ill, frail, confined to bed or confused. Some people bought insurance for this moment, paying tiny weekly amounts all their lives just in case they needed something extra when the end came. Others had families to take care of them - daughters to look after them, sons to go to live with. But there were those who had no one, nowhere to go and no hope - for them there was a stark choice - go into the Workhouse or turn to nuns in charitable orders for care in their final days.

On the night of 30 April 1941, there were some one hundred people living at St. Joseph's in Torr Lane, Hartley. Although the nuns were Catholic in faith, no one was turned away from St Joseph's so long as they were old, infirm and destitute. The nuns had no money of their own and each day, walked the streets of Plymouth, begging money for their work.

On the night of 30 April 1941, a bomb exploded adjacent to the Home, causing massive damage and rendering it uninhabitable. In the explosion, four people were killed - Mary Gallwan (who is remembered below) Annie Bell, Anne Lynch and Mary Wills. Next day, the task of removing the inmates to a safer place on the outskirts of Brixham began, together with everything of use that could be salvaged.
