The Memorial to Nurses and children killed in the City Hospital

This plaque commemorates the nurses and children killed on the night of 20/21 March 1941 in the bombing of the City Hospital.

On the night of Thursday March 20th/ Friday March 21st, 336 people died in Plymouth. Among them were the nurses on duty and the little patients in the Children's Ward at the City Hospital which received a direct hit during the raid. A mother, Dorothy Santilla, was also killed alongside her baby son aged 1 week.

Civilian. John William MacGregor of 9 Kirkby Place. Son of the late John Fraser MacGregor and of Jane (see above). Injured 21 April 1941 at Portland Square Shelter; died the same day at the Prince of Wales Hospital, Greenbank aged 52.
WINIFRED McGUIRK
Civililan Nurse. Winifred May McGurk of 22 Rosedown Avenue, Swilly. Daughter of John and Gladys McGuirk (née Shearon). Born in Liverpool in the September Quarter of 1923. Died in the City Hospital 20/21 March 1941 aged 17.

Civilian. Alexander John William McHutchon. Son of Andrew and Jennifer McHutchon of Ellangowan, Ardnadam, Argyllshire; husband of Grace McHutchon. Died at the Royal Naval Armament Depot at Bull Point aged 46.

Child. Jean Florence McKeane of 21 Quarry Street, Stonehouse. Believed to be the grandchild of Mabel McKeane (see below). Died at 31 Emma Place, Stonehouse 21 March 1941 aged 2.

Civilian. Mabel McKeane of 21 Quarry Street, Stonehouse. Daughter of the late Thomas William and Selina Fox (née Gilbert) of 10 Northumberland Terrace, West Hoe. Born in Plymouth in the June Quarter of 1885. Died at 31 Emma Place 21 March 1941 aged 57.
