CASUALTIES OF THE BOMBING OF PLYMOUTH

S

Please  note:

These casualty lists are presented in alphabetical order of surnames. Where several people have the same surname, first names are also presented in alphabetical order. Consequently, members of the same family will not be presented as a group. The phrases "see above" and "see below" indicate when a person belongs to a family group.

The former site of Woolworths after the bombing

The people of Plymouth made an astonishing effort to bring some sort of normality back to their lives as quickly as possible . The manager of what had been Woolworths at 56 Old Town Street, climbed to the top of a bombed building to take this photo. Look closely and in the centre of the picture you will see an X marking the spot where his store had once stood. Look again and you will see that the streets have been cleared of debris and buses are running and some traffic is moving. What you cannot see is the old Market building in which Woolworths (and other main stores) set up stalls and were  open for business just hours after the destruction of their premises.
