The mass funeral of victims in March 1941
The first mass funeral of victims took place in March 1941 but only a handful of mourners attended. Transport was paralysed and few relatives knew at this point what had happened in Plymouth as there was a tight news blackout. throughout the county.

Child. Betty Phyllis Wood of 3 Pearson Road, Mutley. Daughter of William Henry Woods (died at sea June 1940) and Mercy Emily Woods (née Abnett). Born 25 Aug 1925 in Plymouth.  Died 18 November 1940 at 3 Pearson Road aged 15.

MERCY WOOD

Civilian. Mercy Emily Woods (nee Abnett) of 3 Pearson Road, Mutley. Wife of William Henry Woods; mother of Betty (see above). Born 8 April 1900 in Rochester, Kent. Died 18 November 1940 at 3 Pearson Road aged 40.

Mercy and Betty are buried in the Ford Cemetery.   On the night of the bombing Mercy's son, also named William Woods, was in the house, home on leave from his ship, and he decided to stay in bed while his mum and sister went down to the cellar: when the bomb hit, the cellar received a direct hit and the house collapsed killing Mercy, Betty was pulled out but died as she reached the hospital. William the son) was also pulled out and spent some time in hospital. Mercy's sister and brother in law had to travel from Rochester to Plymouth to sort everything out and in the end they took William (the son) back home with them after the funeral.
