Index for St. Marychurch
Palace Hotel bombing

During World War 2, the Palace Hotel was used as an RAF Hospital. On 23rd October 1942 it took a direct hit by a German bomber which caused many deaths and took out the central portion of the building. The bomb damage was repaired after the war but this was already quite an old building which had been shaken to ts very core by the blast and by the start of the 21st century was showing signs of age. It was recently sold to a Chinese company who have promised to return the 20 acre site to some kind of use which will continue to keep the Palace available to the public.) The grounds already contain many recreational areas.

The ancient parish of Marychurch (now known as St. Marychurch) includes a number of (once tiny) hamlets, such as Babbacombe, Barton, Watcombe, Collaton Shiphay, Edginswell and Combe Pafford.
