ARTHUR AYRES DCM

The award of the Distinguished Conduct Medal to G/6884 Sergeant Arthur James Ayres of the 1st Battalion, the East Kent Regiment (The Buffs) was gazetted 4 November 1918. He died in action at the age of 27 on 18 September 1918 so the award was posthumous. He was awarded the Military Medal for another act of bravery (documentation not available) and this was gazetted 20 August 1919.

Arthur Ayres was the son of Frederick and Maria Ayres and was born in Talaton in the December Quarter of 1890.

From The London Gazette

4 November 1918:

"For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He displayed great dash and courage during a raid. He was first over the parapet and dashed on ahead to the objective. He assisted his officer in getting five of the enemy out of a dug-out, killing one and capturing the rest. All this was done before the platoon had reached the post. Through-out the operation he set a splendid example to the men."
