Curiously enough, it was Thomas Edgelow's girls' school that survived under this name. It was sold to two elderly school mistress spinsters - Annie and Alice Whytall .
They had previously been joint proprietors of the "The Ladies' School" at 25 Teign Street in West Teignmouth. Presumably, with the purchase of Thomas Edgelow's school, they hoped to use its good name as a basis for expansion.
The 1891 census lists 2 live-in governesses (other teachers may have visited on a daily basis) and 3 domestic servants. There are 14 pupils and we can see that the trend was for the baorders to come from within the county rather than from overseas. |
