BOARDERS AT MYRTLE HILL SCHOOL, TEIGNMOUTH IN 1851 |
This school, run by Floriska Slater, shows a listing of 13 pupils in 1851. 5 domestic servants cared for a household presided over by a Frenchwoman and her parents. There were resident teachers of drawing and music plus two governesses for this relatively small number of girls and we see here what were considered important elements of a lady's education in the middle of the 19th century - the ability to speak and read French, to play and sing a little and to be able to sketch and draw.
The school had not been established in 1841 and cannot be found in the 1861 Census. |
