BOARDERS AT THORN PARK SCHOOL, TEIGNMOUTH  IN 1861

(PREVIOUSLY KNOWN AS  HILLFORD HOUSE)

In 1861,Thomas Edgelow was still the headmaster of this school, previously known as Hillford House School. The Census described him as "the Principal and Proprietor of a Boarding School employing 4 teachers, with 7 servants and 24 pupils". He still attracted pupils from Ireland and India who have been sent back to England to be educated by families living abroad. These children would have remained at the school all year round and probably would not have seen their parents for a considerable period. More of Thomas Edgelow's sons were also being educated at the school and  are listed separately at the end.

The 1861 Census also shows "Thorn End School" in premises adjacent to the boys' school. This establishment was presided over by Elizabeth Ford, a schoolmistress who was sister-in-law to Thomas Edgelow. The majority of her pupils (but not all) were girls.
