BOARDERS AT THORN PARK SCHOOL IN 1871

By 1871,Thomas Edgelow was aged 67, but still firmly in command as headmaster of Thorn Park School previously known as Hillford House School. There is nothing to suggest that the school had moved  or extended its premises but it was significantly larger than in 1861. 

The 1871 Census lists 3 resident assistant masters, 3 governesses, 7 servants and 42 pupils. In addition, seven of his own children were still living at home. His own family by then numbered 12 children and the older boys would have been taught alongside the fee-paying pupils. Thomas Edgelow's sons of school age in 1871 are listed separately at the end.
