 CASUALTIES OF THE BOMBING OF TEIGNMOUTH IN WORLD WAR 2

This casualty list has been compiled using a number of sources.. No single source contained all of the names below, partly because servicemen who died in the various incidents were listed as military casualties by their individual units. 

This listing is not a definitive list of the raids which took place on Teignmouth between July 1940 and February 1944. In these raids, some 228 houses were destroyed and more than 2000 damaged. It is hoped, however, that it gives a complete record of the names of those killed in the bombing of Teignmouth.

 

ATTACK ON THE SEA FRONT 7 JULY 1940

One person was killed, four children were severely injured and a further eight people (including four more children) also suffered injuries.

 

FLORENCE JOYCE MEDLAND
Civilian. Daughter of Albert S. Medland, of 48 Parson Street. Severely injured 7 July 1940, at Teignmouth Pier; died at Teignmouth Hospital 8 Jul 1940 aged 16. 

 

RAID OF 2 MARCH 1941 (Hill Lane and The Avenues)

Five people were killed and six more were injured.

ELSIE JANE FIELD
Civilian of 47 Second Avenue, Teignmouth. Daughter of the late William Edward and Mary Jane Newman; wife of Frank Field. Born in the June Quarter of 1887 in Teignmouth.  Died at 47 Second Avenue  2 March 1941 aged 53.
FRANK FIELD
Civilian of 47 Second Avenue, Teignmouth. Husband of Elsie Jane Field (formerly NEWMAN - see above). Born in Teignmouth in the June Quarter of 1880. Died at 47 Second Avenue 2 March 1941 aged 61.
DELPHINE MARY HOOK
Child of 47 Second Avenue, Teignmouth. Daughter of Seaman Leslie George Hook, RN, and Dorcas Elsie Hook. Died at 47 Second Avenue 2 Mar 1941 aged 3. (See report on Frank and Elsie Field above).
DORCAS ELSIE  HOOK
Civilian of 47 Second Avenue. Daughter of Frank and Elsie Jane Field; wife of Seaman Leslie George Hook, RN  (killed in same incident). Died at 47 Second Avenue 2 Mar 1941 aged 29. (See report on Frank and Elsie Field above).
LESLIE GEORGE HOOK
Seaman Leslie George Hook of the Royal Naval Reserve, HMS Raleigh, home on leave. Son of William and Elizabeth Ann Hook (formerly JORDAN) of Teignmouth; husband of Dorcas Elsie Hook (see above) and father of Delphine Mary Hook (see above). Died in the same incident 2 Mar 1943 aged 29. (See report on Frank and Elsie Field above).

 

RAID OF 8 MAY 1941 (Teignmouth Hospital and adjacent property)

11 people were killed, four were injured and four more were treated for shock

ELSA OLGA BRUNS

Nurse of "Formosa", Torpark Road, Torquay. Daughter of Frederick Adolf and Edna Annie Bruns. Died at Teignmouth Hospital 8 May 1941 aged 26. (Known as Olga)

MARY LOUISA COTMORE

Civilian of 2 Foresters Terrace, Teignmouth. Daughter of James Stephens Cotmore and Harriet (formerly RUSSELL). Born in the September Quarter of 1880 at Teignmouth. Died at Teignmouth Hospital. 8 May 1941 aged 61. Known as Louise.

ROSINA ESWORTHY
Civilian of 31 Brunswick Street, Teignmouth. Widow of  William Esworthy. Died at Teignmouth Hospital 8 May 1941 aged 69.
JANE ELIZABETH HERBERT
Civilian of Heswall, Kingsdown Road, Teignmouth. Wife of H. E. Herbert. Died at Heswall, Kingsdown Road 8 May 1941 aged 60. (Heswall was next door to the hospital)
BEATRICE MARY JAMES
Nurse. Daughter of Frederick and Hilda James, of Alberta Mansions, Teignmouth. Died at Teignmouth  Hospital 8 May 1941 aged 17.
BEATRICE MILNER
Nurse of Lareys, Dawlish Road. Daughter of the late Abraham Greaves Milner and Annie M. Milner, of Gawthorpe, Ossett, Yorkshire. Died at Teignmouth Hospital 8 May 1941 aged 49 (Miss Mules, a local doctor, owned Lareys which before the war was a convalescent home.)
ELIZA MOORE
Patient of 2 Paradise Glen, Paradise Road. Died at Teignmouth Hospital 8 May 1941 aged 75.
BESSIE MUNDY
Patient of Coombe Bank, Lanscore Road. Died at Teignmouth Hospital. 8 May 1941 aged 55.
MURIEL LILY GEORGINA TAYLOR
Nurse. Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Taylor, of 34 Hero Street, Hawthorne Road, Bootle, Lancashire. Died at Teignmouth Hospital.  Died 8 May 1941 aged 22.
JOHN FRANCIS TATCHELL
Civilian of "Claremont" Bishopsteignton. Son of Samuel and Sarah Tatchell and husband of Emily (formerly WILLS). Born in the December Quarter of 1860 at Chiselborough, Somerset. Died at Teignmouth Hospital 8 May 1941 aged 80.
ROSA WINSBORROW
Civilian Patient of 5 Dagmar Street, Shaldon. Died at Teignmouth Hospital 8 May 1941 aged 56.

 

RAID OF 24 OCTOBER 1941 (Exeter Road)

Two people were killed and four injured

 

THOMAS EDRED EVEL
Civilian of Mount Everest Lodge, Exeter Road, Teignmouth. Born in the June Quarter of 1897 in Plymouth where his father had a fruit shop. Died at Mount Everest Lodge. 24 October 1941 aged 45.
GEORGE SHACKELL
Lance Corporal George Shackell of the Queen's Royal Regiment, 70th Battalion. Son of Harry and H. S. Shackell, of Tottenham. Died while walking back to the Haldon Military Camp with another soldier who was injured, 24 October 1941 aged 19. Buried in the Tottenham and Wood Green Cemetery

 

  RAID OF 2 JULY 1942  (Bitton Street and the surrounding neighbourhood)

6 people were killed, 2 were severely injured, 1 of whom later died, and 11 were injured

Civilian of 1 Gloucester Road, Teignmouth. Widow of Francis Prout. Died at 1 Gloucester Road 2 Jul 1942 aged 66.

Civilian of 1 Gloucester Road. Daughter of the late Richard Puckey. Injured at 1 Gloucester Road; died same day at Teignmouth Hospital.Died 2 Jul 1942 aged 72
CHARLOTTE EMELINE SALTER
Civilian of 3 Gloucester Road. Widow of George Henry Salter. Injured 2 July 1942, at 3 Gloucester Road; died at Teignmouth Hospital.Died 21 Jul 1942 aged 76.
DICK SMITH
Seaman Dick Smith of the Royal Naval Patrol Service, HM Trawler Kingscourt. Died 2 July 1942 while home on leave. Buried in Teignmouth Cemetery.

Civilian of 2 Gloucester Road. Widow of Richard Stephen Smith. Injured 2 July 1942, at 2 Gloucester Road; died at Teignmouth Hospital.Died 7 Jul 1942 aged 51

Child of 2 Gloucester Road, Teignmouth. Son of Edith Maud Ellen Smith, and of the late Richard Stephen Smith. Died at 2 Gloucester Road 2 Jul 1942 aged 15.
PERCIVAL PALMER TAYLOR
Civilian of 26 Gipsy Lane, Hunton Bridge, Watford, Hertfordshire. Husband of Ethel Taylor. Injured at 2 Gloucester Road; died same day at Teignmouth Hospital 2 Jul  1942 aged 59.

 

RAID OF 31 JULY 1942 (Bitton Avenue and The Haywoods)

Eight people were killed, six severely injured and eight injured

 

IDA ALICE CURTIS
Civilian of 37 Bitton Avenue, Teignmouth. Daughter of Frederick and Harriet Webber and wife of Harry Tracey Curtis. Born in the December Quarter of 1881 in Exmouth and married in the September Quarter of 1903. Died sometime in July 1942 at 37 Bitton Avenue aged 61.
ADA MAY FORD
Civilian of 39 Bitton Avenue, Teignmouth. Daughter of the late Isaac and Mary Ann Ford. Born in Totnes, where her father worked as a gardener, in the September Quarter of 1888. Died at 39 Bitton Avenue 31 July 1942 aged 53.
ELLEN GOVIER
Civilian of 41 Bitton Avenue, Teignmouth. Died 31 July 1942 aged 86.
DAISY WINIFRED HAMLYN
Civilian of 41 Bitton Avenue, Teignmouth. Wife of Serjeant. Sydney Hector Hamlyn, R.E. Died at 41 Bitton Avenue 31 Jul 1942 aged 40.
MARJORIE ASENATH HAMLYN
Child of 41 Bitton Avenue, Teignmouth. Daughter of Serjeant Sydney Hector Hamlyn, R.E., and of Daisy Winifred Hamlyn (see above). Died at 41 Bitton Avenue 31 Jul 1942 aged 9.
WINIFRED IRENE SHEILA HAMLYN
Child of 41 Bitton Avenue, Teignmouth. Daughter of Serjeant Sydney Hector Hamlyn, R.E., and of Daisy Winifred Hamlyn (see above). Died at 41 Bitton Avenue 31 Jul 1942 aged 13.

Civilian of 37 Bitton Avenue, Teignmouth. Son of the late Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Whiteman, of Willesden Green, Middlesex; husband of Edith Mary Whiteman. Died at 37 Bitton Avenue 31 Jul  1942 aged 58

Fourteen killed, ten severely injured and thirty two injured

Civilian of 4 Albion Place, Teignmouth. Daughter of Alice Maude Tapp (see below) and the late William John Tapp; wife of Thomas Henry Bennett. Born in the March Quarter of 1905 at Teignmouth. Died at 7 Albion Place 13 August 1942 aged 37.

CARRIE CHAMINGS

Civilian of 1A Barnpark Terrace, Teignmouth. Widow of William Daniel Chamings. Her former name was LITTLEJOHNS and her marriage was registered at Wandsworth in the March Quarter of 1901. Died at 1A Barnpark Terrace 13 August 1942 aged 70.

WILLIAM WALLACE CLODE

Civilian. Son of William and Emma Clode of Teignmouth and husband of Emily Clode of 4 Coombe Road, Teignmouth. Born in the December Quarter of 1890 at Teignmouth. Died at Higher Brimley 13 August 1942 aged 53.

THELMA JANET COLES

Child. Daughter of A.C.2 Leonard Arthur Coles, R.A.F., and Gertrude Kathleen Coles, of 16 Oakfield Gardens, Beckenham, Kent. Died at Myrtle Hill, Teignmouth 13 August 1942 aged 6

ELIZA COX

Civilian of 9 Parson Place, Parson Street, Teignmouth. Daughter of the late Henry and Elizabeth Gale, of 8 Parkway Road, Chudleigh; widow of George Henry Cox. Born in Bovey Tracey in 1861; married in the June Quarter of 1882. Injured 13 August 1942, at 9 Parson Place; died at Teignmouth Hospital 14 August 1942 aged 81.

Civilian of 2 Myrtle Hill, Teignmouth. Daughter of Florence Bearne, of 89 London Road, Wembley, Middlesex, and of the late William Bearne; wife of Reginald Henry Hodge. Died at 2 Myrtle Hill 13 Aug 1942 aged 53..

ROSE HODGE

Civilian of 18 Quarry Park Road, Plymouth. Daughter of Florence Bearne, of 89 London Road, Wembley, Middlesex, and of the late William Bearne; wife of John Hodge, of 18 Quarry Park Road, Peverell, Plymouth. Died at 2 Myrtle Hill, Teignmouth 13 Aug 1942 aged 51.

ALICE JANE LEE

Civilian of 5 Parson Street, Teignmouth. Widow of Henry Wilson Lee. Married in Teignmouth in the December Quarter of 1909. (formerly SHARLAND). Born in Teignmouth in the December Quarter of 1877. Died at 5 Parson Street 13 Aug 1942 aged 64.

Civilian of 52A Parson Street, Teignmouth. Husband of Mary Maria Loosemore (see below). Married in the December Quarter of 1889. Born in Teignmouth in the March Quarter of 1866. Died at 52A Parson Street 13 Aug 1942 aged 76.

Civilian. Daughter of George and Eliza Hole of Teignmouth and widow of Frederick John Brock Best. Born in 1865 at Teignmouth and married in the September Quarter of 1889. Died at 10 Higher Brook Street, Teignmouth 2 September 1942 aged 77.

PAULINE NORAH BROCK BEST

Civilian. Daughter of Florence Mary (see above), and of the late Frederick John Brock Best. Born in the December Quarter of 1896 at Teignmouth. Died at 10 Higher Brook Street, Teignmouth 2 September 1942 aged 45.

ALICE JESSIE GILPIN
Civilian of St. Budeaux, Seymour Road, Newton Abbot.. Daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Smith, of South Devon Villas, Newton Abbot and wife of Thomas Henry Gilpin. Died at 11 Higher Brook Street 2 Sep 1942 aged 68.

Six killed, four injured 

ALBERT WILLIAM BOORER
Leading Stoker Albert William Boorer of the Royal Navy, HMML 540*. Son of Albert John and Rhoda Boorer of Teignmouth; widower of Gwendoline Boorer and father of Raymond (see below). Born in the March Quarter of 1905. Died at 15 Park Street, Teignmouth 3 November 1942 aged 39. Buried in Teignmouth Cemetery.
RAYMOND STANLEY BOORER

Child. of 15 Park Street, Teignmouth. Son of Leading. Stoker Albert William Boorer, R.N. (killed in same incident), and of the late G. Boorer. Died at 15 Park Street, Teignmouth 3 November 1942 aged 15.

RHODA BEATRICE BOORER

Member of the W.V.S. Civilian of 15 Park Street, Teignmouth. Widow of Albert John Boorer and mother of Albert William Boorer (see above). Her former name was LEE and her marriage was registered at Eastbourne in the June Quarter of 1901. Died at 15 Park Street. 3 November 1942 aged 61

Child of 15 Park Street. Daughter of Harold Richard Stevens, and of Mary Alexandra Stevens. Died at 15 Park Street. Died 3 Nov 1942 aged 3 months.
MARY ALEXANDRA STEVENS
Civilian of 15 Park Street. Daughter of Rhoda Beatrice (see above), and of the late Albert John Boorer; wife of Harold Richard Stevens (former name BOORER). Died at 15 Park Street 3 Nov 1942 aged 29.
DORA ELLEN POWELL YOUNG
Civilian of St. David's, The Bartons, Dawlish. Daughter of the late Robert and Martha Powell Saul, of Ferndale; widow of Capt. (retd.) James Young, of Bangalore, Mysore State, India. Died at Gwynfa Nursing Home 3 Nov 1942 aged 86.

Twenty killed, five severely injured and twenty two injured

 

SIDNEY JAMES BRANCHETT
Civilian. Husband of Maude Emily Branchett, formerly of 56 West Street, Fishguard, Pembrokeshire, Wales. His birth was registered at Sheppey in the June Quarter of 1893. Died at 5 Powderham Terrace, Teignmouth 10 January 1943 aged 50.

BERNARD EDWARD JOSEPH BROOK

Home Guard member of 8 Alexandra Terrace, Teignmouth. Son of Louisa Ann Brook, of 3 Fore Street, Bishopsteignton, and of the late Charles Brook; husband of Eileen Martha Brook and father of John Brook (See below). Injured at 8 Alexandra Terrace 10 January 1943; died same day at Teignmouth Hospital aged 27.
EDWARD JOHN CHARLES BROOK
Member of the A.T.C.; of 8 Alexandra Terrace, Teignmouth. Son of Louisa Ann Brook, of 3 Fore Street, Bishopsteignton, and of the late Charles Brook and brother of Bernard (see above). Injured at 8 Alexandra Terrace 10 January 1943; died same day at Teignmouth Hospital aged 19.

EILEEN MARTHA BROOK

Civilian of 8 Alexandra Terrace, Teignmouth. Daughter of Mary McCarthy, of 17 Alexandra Terrace, and of George McCarthy (See foot of page); wife of Bernard Edward Joseph Brook (see above). Died at 8 Alexandra Terrace 10 January 1943 aged 26.
JOHN ALEXANDER CHARLES BROOK
Child. of 8 Alexandra Terrace, Teignmouth. Son of Bernard Edward Joseph and Eileen Martha Brook (see above). Injured at 8 Alexandra Terrace 10 January 1943; died same day at Teignmouth Hospital aged 12 months.
AGNESE BLANCHE CHEVERTON
Civilian formerly of 3, The Elms, Stoke, Devonport, Plymouth. Widow of Charles Cheverton (he was killed 23 April 1941 in a raid on Devonport). Her former name was CROCKETT and her marriage was registered in the December Quarter of 1913 in the Isle of Wight. Died at 5 Powderham Terrace, Teignmouth 10 January 1943 aged 57.
JANE BOWEN HARRIS COLEMAN
Civilian of 5 Powderham Terrace, Teignmouth. Daughter of Caroline Hendy and wife of Samuel John Coleman. Born in the March Quarter of 1864 at Plymstock and married in the March Quarter of 1891. (Former name HENDY). Injured at 5 Powderham Terrace 10 January 1943; died same day at Teignmouth Hospital aged 79. 
OLIVE WARWICK COLEMAN
Civilian of 5 Powderham Terrace, Teignmouth. Wife of Harold Coleman who she married in the June Quarter of 1914. Her former name was BANNER. Born in Northfield, Worcs in the December Quarter of 1889.  Died at 5 Powderham Terrace 10 January 1943 aged 54.
SAMUEL JOHN COLEMAN
Civilian of 5 Powderham Terrace, Teignmouth. Husband of Jane Bowen Harris Coleman (see above). Born in the June Quarter of 1867 at Plymstock and married in the March Quarter of 1891. Died at 5 Powderham Terrace 10 January 1943 aged 75.
VIOLET MAY PRIMROSE COUSINS 
Civilian. of 16 Chapel Street, Teignmouth. Born in the June Quarter of 1909 at Teignmouth. Died at 15 Chapel Street 10 January 1943 aged 32.
FLORENCE WATSON GODDARD
Civilian of 5 Powderham Terrace, Teignmouth. Daughter of the late Daniel Everett and Maria Goddard. Born in Forest Hill, Kent in the December Quarter of 1870. Her father had been a clerk in the Bank of England. Died at 5 Powderham Terrace 10 Jan 1943 aged 72.

KATE EVANS HAMBLEY
Civilian of 5 Powderham Terrace, Teignmouth. Daughter of the late William and Annie Hambley, of Hayle, Cornwall. Born in the December Quarter of 1860 in Phillack, Hayle. Died at 5 Powderham Terrace 10 Jan 1943 aged 82.
HELENA HASTINGS
Civilian formerly of 36 St. Mary's Crescent, Church End, Hendon, London. Widow of Walter Hastings. Died at 4 Powderham Terrace, Teignmouth 10 Jan 1943 aged 54.
GEORGE WILLIAM PRATT
Civilian of 7 Alexandra Terrace, Teignmouth. Son of Jessie (see below) and the late Frederick Wallace Pratt. Died at 7 Alexandra Terrace 10 Jan 1943 aged 30.
JESSIE PRATT
Civilian of 7 Alexandra Terrace, Teignmouth. Daughter of John and Selina Hitchcock, widow of Frederick Wallace Pratt and mother of George above. (Formerly HITCHCOCK). Born in the September Quarter of 1880 in Teignmouth. Died at 7 Alexandra Terrace. Died 10 Jan 1943 aged 62.
PETER FRANCIS RENDELL
Civilian. Son of Irene Rendell, of Carsdale, Haldon Avenue, Teignmouth and of William Francis Rendell (see below). Died at 5 Powderham Terrace 10 Jan 1943 aged 17.
WILLIAM FRANCIS  RENDELL
Civilian Sergeant in the Special Constabulary. Husband of Irene Rendell, of Carsdale, Haldon Avenue and father of Peter (see above). Born in the March Quarter of 1891. Died at 5 Powderham Terrace 10 Jan 1943 aged 51.
HERBERT LIONEL SKINNER
Writer Herbert Lionel Skinner of the Royal Navy, HMS President V. Son of Sidney and Mary Skinner; husband of Jessie Sheriff Skinner, of Teignmouth, who died in the same incident 10 Jan 1943 aged 37.
JESSIE SHERIFF SKINNER
Civilian S.R.N of 1 Darlington Street, Bath, Somerset. Daughter of W. S. and E. B. Miller, of 4 Hermosa Road, Teignmouth; wife of Writer Herbert Lionel Skinner, R.N. (killed in same incident). Born in Exeter in the June Quarter of 1910. Died at Teignmouth Hospital 10 Jan 1943 aged 32.
