Still remaining in Winkleigh are the earthwork foundations of a motte and bailey timber castle which once stood here. Part of the site has now been incorporated into the gardens of nearby Winkleigh Court. During the 18th century, a brick-built banqueting hall was erected on the summit of the motte.
