Now
we're in the holiday season,
it seems only right to pay a visit to the seaside - not in Devon for
once but , instead, a return trip to the Islands of Scilly to discover
a secret revealed by the will of John Stedeford, a Master Mariner in the
Royal Navy, turned pilot on the treacherous coasts around the Scilly
Islands. We've included another link to Richard Pearce's wonderful
webcam on the islands to set the scene - thank you Richard, once again.
From
those sunny islands, we move to one that is a little cooler - Bell Island
off the Newfoundland coast. There, we follow Maggie Silver's impressive
and persistent voyage of discovery in search of the story of Harriet
Hiscock, ancestor of the many Stentifords who descend
from her marriage to Owen Stentiford. We've
seen in the last two Issues how the family of Robert and Elizabeth
Stentiford came to be dispersed all over the world. The story of their
son Owen has one striking difference to those of his siblings in that
he and his wife Harriet came back to England from the other side of the
world to settle with their children in Devon. We'd like to take this
opportunity to thank all those Newfoundlanders whose generous assistance
has enabled us to tell the story of Harriet's family - most especially Donna
Hiscock, Jennifer Nash, Patricia Byrne, Ruth Archibald and Lloyd C. Rees
- and special thanks to Maggie who never gave up on the story.
