Born in Crediton in the September Quarter of 1867; died in Crediton in 1954 aged 86. His grandson has his South Africa medal with 4 bars (Cape Colony, Rhodesia, Orange Free State and South Africa 1901). Fred Elston re-enrolled at the start of the Great War and served in the A.S.C. for its duration.

A professional soldier, he was one of those trapped in Ladysmith throughout the siege. At the end of the war, he continued as a regular soldier and in 1909 is recorded as working in barracks as a Sergeant Instructor. He died in Devon in the late 1950s. Held campaign medals for the South African War. |
