Private Charles Frederick Gale of the 1st Rifle Volunteers. Son of Charles and Tryphena Gale. Born in Topsham in the March Quarter of 1880. The Rifle Volunteers were part of the Devon Service Company which joined the Devonshire Regiment in Natal in 1900. Invalided home after being hospitalised with fever 26 April 1901.

22756 Trooper Lionel Norman Garstin of the 27th (Devonshire) Company, the 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Son of William and Emily Garstin. Born in Marylebone in the September Quarter of 1877.

Trooper John Geary of the Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry. Son of Leonard and Sarah Geary. Born in Exeter in the June Quarter of 1870. Volunteered and left for for service in South Africa January 1900.
GENDLE, H
Trooper Herbert Samuel Gendle of the Royal 1st Devonshire Yeomanry. Son of Samuel and Louisa Gendle of Dartmouth. Born in Launceston, Cornwall in the September Quarter of 1881. Volunteered for service in South Africa and left for Aldershot 6 Jan 1902 at the age of 20. Returned safely to 2 Loverings Cottages, South Ford Rd., Dartmouth.

4276 Private William Gerry of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Believed to have been an orphan - no family has been traced. Born in Okehampton in the March Quarter of 1876. Wounded in action at the Battle of Colenso 15 Dec 1899 at the age of 23. 6 years service.

Civilian Charles Wallace Gibson who volunteered to go to South Africa in the Telegraph Battalion of the Royal Engineers. Son of George and Mary Gibson. Born in Exeter in the September Quarter of 1875. His name appears on a board in Exeter's Guildhall.
GIDLEY, G

(Additional information kindly supplied by the Gidley One-Name Study)

Lance Corporal George Gidley of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Eliza Gidley. Born in Drewsteignton in 1876. Wounded in the town of Mooi River in May 1900 at the age of 24 and invalided home to Exeter Barracks. In the 1901 census George, aged 21, is described as General labourer and Army pensioner, wounded in South Africa.

3574 Private James Henry Gidley, 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regt. Born in the December Quarter of 1873 in Heavitree, Devon. Son of James and Martha Gidley. Husband of Lucy Gidley, and father of Violet Ladysmith Gidley. Reported in the Times Feb. 16, 1901 "dangerously ill, enteric: Standerton", then on Feb. 22nd 1900 "deaths, enteric: Pte. G. [sic] Gidley, Standerton, Feb 19th." Commemorated on the Devonshire's memorial board in Exeter Cathedral.

Private William Henry Gliddon of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Samuel and Elizabeth Gliddon. Born in Holsworthy in the June Quarter of 1878. Severely wounded in action in the battle of Elandslaagte 21 October 1899 at the age of 21. Trained in Exeter in 1893.
GLOVER, E 3414 Private Ernest Alfred Glover of the 4th Militia Reserve. Son of Ann Glover. Born in Bideford in the September Quarter of 1879. Killed in action during the assault on Ladysmith 23 February 1900 at the age of 20.
GOAD, A
Private Arthur Harry Goad of the 2nd (Prince of Wales) Volunteer Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Amy Goad. Born in Stonehouse in the December Quarter of 1877. Returned home safely from South Africa 7 June 1901 to the Marble Works, Plymouth (which was owned and run by this man's family). Present at Exeter to receive his medals from Lord Roberts 9 September 1901.

GOSLAND, F
Private Frederick William Gosland of the 3rd Volunteer Brigade,  the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Elizabeth Gosland of Cullompton. Born in Exeter in the December Quarter of 1875. The Rifle Volunteers were part of the Devon Service Company which joined the Devonshire Regiment in Natal in 1900. Returned home safely 7 June 1901 to Reid's Place, Cullompton.

Private Arthur Edwin Charles Gosling of the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Charles and Bertha Gosling. Born in Littleham, Exmouth in the December Quarter of 1876. Wounded in action at Graspan 25 Nov 1899.  A letter he wrote home from the front was published.

Private William George P Gotham of the 2nd (Prince of Wales) Volunteer Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Henry and Mary Gotham. Born in Plymouth in the March Quarter of 1882. Returned home safely from South Africa 7 June 1901 to Plymouth.

Trooper Ernest John P. Gould of the Royal 1st Devonshire Imperial Yeomanry who volunteered to fight in South Africa. Son of Albert and Mary Gould. Born in Powderham in the December Quarter of 1874. His name appears on a board in Exeter's Guildhall.

Bugler Edgar Henry Gratwicke of the 2nd Battalion, the Cheshire Regiment who volunteered to fight in South Africa. Son of George and Mary Gratwicke. Born in St. Thomas, Exeter in the March Quarter of 1882. His name appears on a board in Exeter's Guildhall.

5581 Private William Frederick Greenwood of the 4th Volunteer Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Elizabeth Greenwood. Invalided home to 24 Laurel Cottages, Barnstaple. Present at Exeter to receive his medals from Lord Roberts 9 September 1901.

4430 Private Frank Gregory of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Elizabeth Gregory. Born in Exeter in the March Quarter of 1875. Wounded fighting for the relief of Ladysmith between Feb 14 and Feb 27 1900. Six years service at that date.

Private William Gregory of the Plymouth Company, the Royal Marines Light Infantry. Son of Andrew and Mary Ann Gregory. Born in Colebrook in the March Quarter of 1873. Seriously wounded in action in August 1900 at the age of 27.

Trooper Sydney Edwin Grist of the Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry. Son of William and Jane Grist. Born in Torquay in the March Quarter of 1882. Volunteered for South Africa from 1 Lisburne Square, Torquay and left for Aldershot 6 Jan 1902 at the age of 20.

3625 Private William John H. Halfyard of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Robert and Sarah Halfyard. Born in Heavitree, Exeter, in the December Quarter of 1873. Took part in Elandslaagte, the Defence of Ladysmith and Belfast. 12 years service to 1903. Held the India medal and clasp. Married Louisa Ellis in Exeter in 1914.

Private Frederick Hamlyn of the Royal Marines. Son of Edwin and Florence Hamlyn. Born in Newton Abbot in 1879. Took part in the battles of Belmont and Graspan. Wrote a letter to  his sister Isabella which was published in the local paper.

Trooper Joseph Burford Hamlyn of the Imperial Light Horse. Son of James and Sarah Hamlyn and brother of William Petrie Hamlyn (see below).. Born in Buckfastleigh in the September Quarter of 1880. Wrote a letter to a Mr Richardson with whom he was studying farming which was published in the local press 10 November 1900.

6493 Trooper William Petrie Hamlyn of the Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry. Son of James and Sarah Hamlyn. Born in Buckfastleigh in the June Quarter of 1877. Left for South Africa Jan 1900. Wrote home that he and Trooper Frankin had volunteered to be mounted messengers in the front line.

4020 Cpl Edward Hammett, 1st & 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment,  Born 1876 in Parish of St Mary Majors Exeter. Enlisted 1894, served in India on North West Frontier / Tirah, shipped to South Africa 1899.  Served in the Defence of Ladysmith and fought in the battle of Elandslaagte with the 1st Battalion Devons.  Later transferred to 2nd Battalion - remained in South Africa until October 1902.  Returned to Exeter 1902 placed on reserve list until 1906. Worked as a postman; re-enlisted 1914-18 war - 15th battalion Devons.

6596 Private William John Hammett of the27th Company, the Devon Imperial Yeomanry. Son of William and Sarah Hammett. Born in Beer, Seaton in the June Quarter of 1878. Mentioned in Disptaches by General Kitchener 8 March 1901 (see London Gazette).
HANSFORD. R

4288 Private Robert George Hansford of the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Emily Hansford. Born in Dulverton in the September Quarter of 1875 but moved to live in Broadhembury. Mentioned in Col. Jacson's book  "The record of a Regiment of the Line" which says that "he was brought to notice for gallantry". He was awarded the DCM (gazetted 27 September 1901) and Mentioned in Despatches twice.

Trooper Charles James Harding of the North Somerset Imperial Yeomanry. Son of James and Martha Harding. Born in Exeter, St. Thomas in the September Quarter of 1867 - the family later moved to Wincanton. As a Volunteer, his name appears on a board in Exeter's Guildhall.
HARDING, H Trooper Herbert John Harding ("Bert") of the Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry. Son of Joseph and Mary Ann Harding. Born in Exeter in the June Quarter of 1875. Volunteered and left for South Africa January 1900.

6546 Private Malcolm Hardy of the 27th (Devonshire) Company, 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Son of John and Mary Jane Hardy. Born in Towland, Durham, in 1878.

Trooper Frederick James Harris of the 27th (Devonshire) Company, 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Son of James and Emily Harris. Born in Chittlehampton in the September Quarter of 1869. Died at Pretoria in October 1900 - cause of death not known.

Private Reginald Oke Harris of the British South African Police (a battalion of 400 police set up under Baden Powell to work alongside Plumer's Rhodesian Regiment in the protection of British subjects during the Boer War). Son of John and Laura Harris. Born in Exeter in the June Quarter of 1868. Killed in defence of Rhodesia. His name appears on Hele's School South African War memorial.

Private Oliver Havill of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment.  Son of Thomas and Ellen Havill. Born in Clyst St. Mary in the October Quarter of 1877. He wrote a letter home from the front.

Private John Hawkins of the 4th Volunteer Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Thomas and Eliza Hawkins. Born in Crediton in the September Quarter of 1874. Returned home safely 7 June 1901 to 4 East Street, Crediton. Present at Exeter to receive his medal from Lord Roberts 9 September 1901.

Private Walter Hawkins of the 1st Rifle Volunteers. Son of James and Mary Ann Hawkins. Born in Shobrooke in the June Quarter of 1879. The Rifle Volunteers were part of the Devon Service Company which joined the Devonshire Regiment in Natal in 1900.

3841 Private James Henry Hay of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Henry and Julia Hay. Born in Plymouth in the March Quarter of 1880. Wounded in the assault on Ladysmith 6 Jan 1900 at the age of 20. Six years service. Medal and two clasps for the Indian Frontier Expedition.

Private Francis Frederick Haythorn of the 2nd (Prince of Wales) Volunteer Battalion (Plymouth), the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Emily Haythorn. Born in Egg Buckland in the December Quarter of 1875. Promoted to Corporal while in South Africa. Returned home safely 7 June 1901 to Laira Post Office, Plymouth. Present at Exeter to receive his medals from Lord Roberts 9 September 1901.
HEADFORD, A
Private Albert George Headford of the Devonshire Regiment. Son of George and Ellen Headford and husband of Louisa (née Ellis). Born in Tiverton in the September Quarter of 1872. A Reservist who rejoined for service in South Africa. Returned home safely to Cosway's Buildings, Tiverton 26 January 1901 and was given an official public welcome by his employers at Ford's Brewery.

4972 Private William Heale of the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Eliza Heale. Born in Tiverton in the June Quarter of 1978. Taken prisoner at the Battle of Colenso and released in June 1900 at Pretoria.

Private Charles Heard of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Richard and Maria Heard and husband of Maria (née Ferris). Born in Launceston in the December Quarter of 1870. Taken prisoner at the Battle of Colenso 15 December 1899 at the age of 29. Reservist.

Private Edward Lionel Heath of the Totnes Volunteers, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Richard and Sarah Heath. Born in Totnes in the December Quarter of 1874. Present at Ladysmith in 1900 during the siege.
HEATHMAN, T
5480 Private Thomas Henry Heathman of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Philip and Eliza Heathman. Born in Sourton (near Bridestowe) in the March Quarter of 1882. Reported by the War Office to be dangerously ill with enteric at Standerton 19 December 1899 at the age of 17. Less than 12 months service at that date.
HEMBOROUGH, J
Private James Hemborough of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Edwin and Elizabeth Hemborough. Born in Tiverton in the March Quarter of 1879. Joined the Natal Field Force in October 1899. He saw service in Ladysmith, North Natal and did duty guarding the railway line at Watervaal Bridge. Hospitalised with fever.

Civilian Harold Edmond Hern of Exeter Fire Brigade. Son of William and Dorcas Hern. Born in East Budleigh in the September Quarter of 1878. He volunteered to go to South Africa to serve in the 98th Ambulance Brigade and his name appears on a board in Exeter's Guildhall.

Driver William Thomas Heysett of No 2 Balloon Section,  the Royal Engineers. Son of James and Lena Heysett. Born in Teignmouth in the December Quarter of 1879. Was in Ladysmith during the siege.

Trooper Harris Edwin Heywood of the Royal Devon Imperial Yeomanry. Son of John and Mary Heywood. Born in Winsford, nr. Dulverton in the December Quarter of 1874. Mentioned in despatches by Lord Kitchener 7 May 1901 as published in the London Gazette.

Trooper James Hill of the 5th Volunteer Brigade of the Devonshire Regiment. Husband of  Elizabeth Hill. Born in Uffculme in 1869. He was a reservist who was ordered to rejoin his regiment on 24 Jan 1900.

Private Ernest Charles Hine of the 83rd Company of Imperial Yeomanry who volunteered to fight in South Africa. Step-son of George Hawkins. Born in St. Thomas in the March Quarter of 1876. His name appears on a board in Exeter's Guildhall. Returned safely in June 1901 to 6 Poltimore Square, Exeter.

4941 Private Robert Alfred Hipperson of the Volunteer Company attached to the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Robert and Esther  Hipperson. Born in Norwich in the September Quarter of 1879. Reported seriously ill at Newcastle by the War Office 16 February 1901. Died from Empycema 27 February 1901 at the age of  21.

Private Henry G Hitchcock of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Henry and Emily Hitchcock. Born in Colaton Raleigh in 1880. Wounded at the battle of Colenso 15 Dec 1899 at the age of 19.

Sergeant John Edwin Hitchcock of the 2nd battalion, the Coldstream Guards. Son of Asenath Hitchcock (widow). Born in Woodbury in the September Quarter of 1870. A letter he wrote home about his experiences at Belmont and Modder River was published in the local press.

Major Wilson Noble Hoare of the 27th Company, (Devonshire) 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Formerly in the Royal Navy. Husband of Mary Louisa (née Koe). Born in Battersea, London, in the September Quarter of 1854. After his marriage, he came to live in Warkleigh, Devon where he joined the Yeomanry  and later volunteered for service in South Africa.

Trooper John Hole of the Royal Imperial Yeomanry. Son of David and Jessie Hole of Park Street, Crediton. Born in Tavistock in 1875. Volunteered for South Africa and left for Aldershot 13 Jan 1902.

Sergeant Nicholas William Holland of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Elizabeth Holland. Born in Saltash in 1869. Died at Maitland and is commemorated in Cape Town on the Maitland Memorial.
HOLLEY, F
Private Frederick Holley of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Philip and Sarah Holley. Born in Burlescombe in 1873. Mentioned in a letter home from John Hookway who mentioned "playing football or cricket with Fred Holley" in the evenings at Surpise Hill, Camp Ladysmith. Returned home safely and resumed work at the lime stone quarry at Burlescombe.

Lance Corporal John Holmes of the 2nd Battalion, the Seaforth Highlanders and the Devonshire Regiment. He served 7 years and 10 months with the Devons and 3 with the Seaforths. He was present at Modder. No details of his family life are known but his name is on the Ipplepen War Memorial.

Trooper Percival A. Holmes - as a member of the Totnes Volunteer Company, he served first in the West Somerset Yeomanry - before transferring to the Transvaal Constabulary in a peace-keeping unit working behind the lines. Son of William Holmes.

28768 Trooper John Albert Honeywill of the 27th (Devonshire) Company, 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Grandson of John and Fanny Young who seem to have brought him up. Born in Crichel, Dorset in the June Quarter of 1872.

Private John Bishop Hookway of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Clara Hookway. Born in Uffculme in the June Quarter of 1869. In the Surprise Hill Camp at Ladysmith with other men from Uffculme - mentioned in Private Jones' letter home.

Private William George Hore of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Martha Hore. Born in Exeter in the September Quarter of 1874. Reported by the War Office to be dangerously ill with enteric at Standerton 17 May 1902.

1977 Colour Sergeant John Horswell of the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Dinah Horswell. Born in Pennycross, Plymouth, in the March Quarter of 1864. Mentioned in Despatches by General Buller for his conduct at Elandslaagte, the Defence of Ladysmith and at Belfast. Awarded the DCM for gallantry at Elandslaagte at the age of 35.

Remembered on the Hele's School South African War Roll of Honour.
