MADGE, A
Private Albert George Madge of the 1st Volunteer Brigade, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of James and Elizabeth Madge. Born in Crediton in the September Quarter of 1876. Left for South Africa 12 May 1900. Returned safely to England June 1901. Address at that time Bowden Hill, Crediton. Present at Exeter to receive his medal from Lord Roberts 9 September 1901.

Lance Corporal John Thomas Madge of the 1st Worcestershire Regiment. Son of William and Susan Madge. Born in Topsham in the December Quarter of 1873 but the family later moved to Wiltshire. His regiment saw service in South Africa from 1900 to 1902. He wrote a letter from the front on 11 May 1900 which was later published in Devon.
MANN, M
Private Moses Mann of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Elizabeth Mann and husband of Louisa (née Barnett) who he married in Holne 24 June 1899.  Born in Holne 31 March 1872. Killed in action in the Battle of  Colenso 15 Dec 1899 at the age of 27.
MARDEN, H
Private Harry Marden of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of James and Sarah Marden. Believed to have been born in Rame, Cornwall, in 1876. Killed in actiuon at Ladysmith 6 January 1900. His name appears on the memorial at Wagon Hill.

Private George James Marks of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of George and Eliza Marks. Born in Woodbury in the March Quarter of 1878. Wounded at Ladysmith 17 February 1900 at the age of 21.

Private Harry Marks of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of George and Eliza Marks and brother of John Marks. Born in Lympstone in the September Quarter of 1875. Wounded in action at Elandslaagte on 21 Oct 1899 at the age of 24. Mentioned in John Mark's letter from the front.

Private John Marks of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of George and Eliza Marks and  brother of Harry. Born in Woodbury in the September Quarter of 1870. Shot in the knee 21 Oct 1899 at the age of 29. Reservist. mentioned in Oliver Havill's letter from the front.

Lieutenant Roger Duncan Marshall of the 2nd (Prince of Wales) Volunteer Battlaion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Henry and Georgina Marshall. Born in St. Kitts, West Indies, in 1870. Volunteered and returned safely to England 8 June 1901.

3689 Private Samuel Marshall of the 4th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment (Militia Reserve). Son of John and Ellen Marshall. Born in Exeter, St. Thomas in 1870. Wounded in action at Potgieter's Drift between Feb 5 and Feb 7 1900 at the age of 30.
MARTIN, G
Trooper George Nicholas Martin of the Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry. Son of William and Agnes Martin. Born in Newton Abbot in the March Quarter of 1868 but later moved to Plymouth. Left for South Africa January 1900. 
MATTERS, S
Private Samuel Matters of the Totnes Volunteers. The 1891 census show him at Millbay Barracks as a Sapper in the Plymouth Militia Division aged 19. Presumably he was stood down as he was later attached to Totnes Post Office. He was given a public send-off by Totnes on 20 January 1900 at the age of 28. He was invalided home  from South Africa to 43 High Street, Totnes. Present at Exeter to receive his medal from Lord Roberts 9 September 1901.
MATTHEWS, A
6494 Colour Sergeant Alexander Gilbert Matthews of the 27th Devonshire Company of the Imperial Yeomanry. Son of Alexander and Mary Matthews. Born in Exeter in the December Quarter of 1870. Worked for solicitors Battishill & Holditch for 15 years before volunteering. Left for South Africa in January 1900. Killed in action at Nooitgedacht 12 Dec 1899 at the age of 29. His name is on a board in Exeter's Guildhall. He lived with his parents at 23 Paris St., Exeter.
McDONALD, M
50441 Lance Corporal M. McDonald of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire regiment. Son of James McDonald of Penznce - his wife resided in Gosprt, Hants.. Born in Burr, Ireland. Killed in action at Colenso 15 December 1899 - age not known. 18 Months service at that time. Awarded the DCM for conspicuous gallantry.
McKIEVER, J
6495 Trooper James David McKiever of the Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry. Grandson of David and Louisa McKieve of Bristol. Born in King's Norton in the September Quarter of 1877. Volunteered for service in South Africa from Exeter and returned safely in April 1901.

Private George Merrifield of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Emma Merrifield. Born in Crediton in the March Quarter of 1875. Killed in action at Tugela 17 Feb 1900 at the age of 26. Reservist. Married with two children.

6571 Corporal John Merson of the Devon Company of the Imperial Yeomanry. Son of John and Harriet Merson of Brinsworthy, North Molton. Born in SouthMolton in the June Quarter of 1871. Wrote a letter from the Front which was published. Selected to receive his medals in person from King Edward VII at Horse Guards Parade on 31 August 1901.
MIDDLETON, W
Private Walter Middleton of the 3rd Volunteer Brigade, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Benjamin and Alice Middleton. Born in Cullompton in the December Quarter of 1875. This brigade formed part of the Devon Service Company which joined the Devonshire Regiment in Natal in 1900. Returned home safely June 1901. Present at Exeter to receive his medal from Lord Roberts 9 September 1901.

4974 Private Walter Henry Miller of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Henry and Elizabeth Miller. Born in Sidmouth in the March Quarter of 1868. Wounded in the Battle of Colenso 15 Dec 1899 at the age of 31. Two years service at that date.

Corporal Frederick B. Mitchell of the 4th Volunteer Brigade, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Richard and Elizabeth Mitchell. Born in Chulmleigh in 1869. Returned safely to England June 1901. Present at Exeter to receive his medal from Lord Roberts 9 September 1901.

Private Horace Hedley Mitchell of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William Mitchell, Superintendent of the Devon Constabulary and his wife Kitty. Born in Exeter in the June Quarter of 1868, later moving to Tavistock. Wounded in action at the battle of Colenso 15 December 1899 at the age of 31.

Sergeant Warren King Mitchell of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Elizabeth Mitchell and brother of Stuart Stanley Mitchell. Born in Dartmouth in the September Quarter of 1879. Wounded in action at the battle of  Colenso 15 December 1899.

24135 Trooper Frederick Mitchelmore of the Devon Imperial Yeomanry. Son of William and Eliza Mitchelmore. Born in Dartmouth in 1870. Volunteered for service in South Africa and left 6 February 1901. His send-off in Exeter was reported in the press.

Lance Sergeant William Henry Mogridge of the 4th Volunteer Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Joseph and Susan Mogridge. Born In Marwood in the March Quarter of 1862 but grew up in Bratton Fleming. Volunteered for service in South Africa and returned safely to Bratton Flemming in June 1901.

Private Charles Moore of G Company, the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Louis and Agnes Moore. Born in Woodbury in the December Quarter of 1873. Saw action at Mooi River which he described in a letter to his sister. Reservist.

21161 Trooper William Drew Moore of the 27th (Devonshire) Company, 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Son of John and Elizabeth Moore. Born in Plymouth in the June Quarter of 1879.
MORRISH, J
Private John Cooper Morrish of the 1st Rifle Volunteers. Son of Elizabeth Morrish (widow). Born in East Budleigh in 1880. His Battalion formed part of the Devon Service Company which joined the 2nd Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment in Natal in 1900. Returned home safely June 1901 to East Budleigh. Present at Exeter to receive his medal from Lord Roberts 9 September 1901.

Private Dudley W. Mortimore of the 5th Haytor Volunteer Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Marian Mortimer - John Mortimer was the Master of Ashburton Grammar School. Born in Llandovey, Wales in 1875. Promoted to Corporal during his period of service. Returned safely 7 June 1901 to the Grammar School House, Ashburton.

Trooper John Mortimer of the 27th (Devonshire) Company, 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Next of kin not known. Born in Christchurch, New Zealand in 1881. Volunteered for service in South Africa and left Exeter for Aldershot 13 January 1902. Returned safely to Oxford Street, St. Thomas, Exeter.

Trooper John Daniel Mortimer of the Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry. Son of Samuel and Frances Mortimer. Born in Powderham in the December Quarter of 1877. Left for South Africa in 1900. His name appears on a board in Exeter's Guildhall.

6572 Lance Sergeant William Mortimer of the Royal Devon Imperial Yeomanry. Son of John and Mary Mortimer. Born in Chittlehampton in the December Quarter of 1871. Mentioned in despatches by Lord Kitchener - (published in the London Gazette 8 March 1901). Selected to receive his medals in person from King Edward VII at Horse Guards Parade on 31 August 1901.

2730 Private Charles Moss of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Henry and Mary Ann Moss. Born in Plymouth in the March Quarter of 1872. Wounded in the Battle of Colenso 15 Dec 1899 at the age of 27. Eleven years service to that date.

Bugler Alfred Mounsdon of the 1st Volunteer Brigade, Devonshire Regiment. Son of Edward and Mary Ann Mounsdon. Born in Sandford in 1868 but the family moved to Bristol later. Left for South Africa 12 May 1900. Returned safely to England in June 1901.Present at Exeter to receive his medal from Lord Roberts 9 September 1901.

Trooper Harry Mudge of the 20th Company, the Devonshire Yeomanry.Son of Henry and Hannah Mudge. Born in Cornwood in the June Quarter of 1880 but then moved to Bristol. Killed in action at Nooitgedacht 13 December 1900 at the age of 20.

6573 Sergeant Farrier William Mugford (also spelt MOGFORD) of the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Mary Ann Mugford. Born in North Molton in 1877. Mentioned in John Bawden's letter home which was published. Selected to recieve his campaign medals from King Edward VII in London 31 August 1901.

Trooper (Arthur) John Murdoch of the 27th Imperial Yeomanry. Brought up by his grandparents Samuel and Harriet Ebdon. Born in Withycombe in the September Quarter of 1881 and worked as a gardener. Volunteered for service in South Africa at the age of 19.

Private Frederick Henry T. Nelstrip of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John  and Mary Ann Nelstrip. Born in Plymouth in the March Quarter of 1870. Wounded 15 February 1900 at the age of 20.
NEWBERRY, W
Private Walter Charles Newberry of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Charles and Mary Ann Newberry. Born in Exeter in the September Quarter of 1881. Wound in action at Ladysmith 23 February 1900 at the age of 18. A well-known Exeter footballer.

5965 Private Sidney Ralph Newcombe of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Ellen Newcombe. Born in Exeter in the December Quarter of 1872. Wounded in action at Edenkop in the Transvall on Christmas Day 1900 at the age of 28.

3382 Private Willie Newcombe of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Jane Newcombe - "his mother lives in New Street, Bideford". Born in Bideford in 1874. Killed at L:adysmith 6 January 1900 at the age of 25. Nine years service at that date. Held the Indian medal and clasps.

3941 Private George Nobbs of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Sarah Nobbs (widow) the family can be found in Norwich Workhouse in 1881; husband of Florence (née Hewitt). Born in Norwich in the December Quarter of 1872. Taken prisoner at Colenso 15 December 1899 at the age of 27.
NOLLOTH, A
4485 Private Alfred Ernest Nolloth of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Samuel and Julia Nolloth. Born in Hackney in the December Quarter of 1878. Died of enteric at Ladysmith 22 January 1900 at the age of 21. 4 years 3 months service at that date. Held the Tirah medal and clasp.

2733 Private Frederick Norgate of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Thomas and Harriet Norgate. Born in Newton Vallence, Hants, in 1870. Wounded in action at Colenso 15 December 1899 at the age of 29. 11 years service at that date.
NORTHEY, G Private Gilbert Northey of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire regiment. Son of John and Sarah Northey. Born in Lifton in the September Quarter of 1874. Took part in the fighting for the relief of Ladysmith. Wounded 18 February 1900 at the age of 25. Two years service at that date.

6574 Trooper John Richards Nott of the 27th Company (Devonshire) Imperial Yeomanry. Son of Louis and Ann Nott. Born in West Buckland in the September Quarter of 1873. Selected to recieve his campaign medals from King Edward VII in London 31 August 1901.

3289  Private Patrick Henry O'Connor of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Born in Birmingham in 1873. Enlisted in 1891 aged 18. Awarded the India medal with clasps for Tirah and the Punjab Frontier; the QSA with clasps for Belfast, Ladysmith and Tugela Heights; the KSA with clasps for South Africa 1901 and 1902. Final discharge as Lance Corporal in 1904.

6524 Trooper John Sobey Olver of the 27th (Devonshire) Company, 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Son of Richard and mary Olver. Born in St. Mabyn, Cornwall in the March Quarter of 1872.

4735 Private John James Onyett of the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Henry and Margaret Onyett. Born in Battersea, London, in the March Quarter of 1875. Wounded at Wagon Hill, Ladysmith 6 January 1900 at the age of 24. Held Tirah medal and clasp. 7 Years service to 1900.

Private Harry Orchard of the 2nd Battalion, the Cheshire Regiment. Son of Frederick and Lavinia Orchard. Born in Exeter in the March Quarter of 1877. Left for South Africa in 1900. His name appears on a board in Exeter's Guildhall.

Private Henry ("Harry") Osmond of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Mary Osmond. Born in Halberton in the June Quarter of 1876. Wounded in action in the Battle of Elandslaagte 21 Oct 1899 at the age of 23.

Colour Sergeant William Osmond of the 2nd Northants Battalion and the Devon Volunteer Company. Son of George and Caroline Osmond. Born in Cullompton in the March Quarter of 1855. 22 years service. Took part in the Zulu Wars and Rorke's Drift 1884. Held the Zulu Campaign medal and clasp.
