PHARE, F |
Information kindly supplied by a family member:
Lance Corporal Francis (Frank) Tucker Phare of the 2nd Devonshire Regiment was born in 1878 in Marwood, the eldest son of William Tucker Phare (1857-1887) and Mary (née Squire). After his father’s early death, Frank was taken into an orphanage but appears to have remained close to the family of his father's elder brother Henry, who ran a building and decorating business as well as the Post Office in Chelston, Torquay. Both Henry (b.1854) and William were originally from Highampton. Henry’s eldest son, also christened Henry but known as Harry, was one year younger than Frank and it is to him that a letter was written whilst Frank was on board the HMS Assaye en route to South Africa. Frank emigrated to New Zealand after the Boer war, but he and Harry remained close and corresponded throughout their lives until Harry’s death in 1966.
