The War of 1982 was not the first time the Royal Navy had fought in the Falkland Islands. This is the Memorial in Stanley dedicated to those who died in the sea battle which took place in November 1914.

Fitzroy is a small settlement , about half way between Goose Green and Stanley, the Falkland's capital.
Close to the airport, it was a place of strategic importance and several major incidents took place in this area, leaving many memorials in their wake. |

Both ships remembered on this Memorial were carrying troops and both caught fire. There were heavy casualties among the Army personnel and Sir Galahad was burnt out. "Sir Tristram" was later brought back to the UK for repairs but the remains of Sir Galahad were towed out to sea and scuttled to become an official war grave on 25 June 1982.
The inscription on the Memorial is as follows: |
The Royal Fleet Auxiliary Memorial at Fitzroy
Commemorating 5 crew members from Sir Galahad and 2 from "Sir Tristram" who died as a result of the air attack on 8 June 1982. These were landing craft with no armaments.

Memorial to those who died on HMS Sheffield on Sea Lion Island
©Martin Dunkin |
On Tuesday 4 May 1982 with barely any warning, an Exocet missile hit HMS Sheffield amidships. The missile caused the deaths of 20 men. The wounded were evacuated to HMS Hermes while the Captain and remaining crew fought to save Sheffield but early in the afternoon the order was given to abandon ship; the frigate Arrow took off most of the 260 survivors. Sheffield finally sank on Sunday 9 May not far from where the original attack occurred. |
