ASHREIGNEY - THE WAR MEMORIAL

 

The neat granite memorial at Ashreigney stands in the  Square in the heart of the village, protected from passing traffic by small granite blocks and reflector posts.

It carries the names of eight men from the parish who were killed in World War 1 - no men or women from Ashreigney lost their lives in the Second World War.

There is a worn inscription on one face of the granite block which supports the Celtic Cross. It reads:

TO THE GLORY OF GOD
AND IN EVER BLESSED MEMORY OF
THE MEN OF THIS PARISH
WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE
IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918

F. BADCOCK
Private Fred Badcock of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Grandson of John and Mary Mitchell of Ashreigney and son of William and Bessie Badcock. Born in Chulmleigh in 1885. Died  18 November 1914 aged 29.
J  BEARDON
Private Lionel John Beardon of the 1/6th Territorial Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Ellen Beardon.  Born in Winkleigh  in the March Quarter of 1898. Died 23 April 1918 aged 21.
S. BOUNDY

Information supplied by a family member:

Private Sidney Boundy of the 8th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of James and Annie Boundy of Burrington. Born in Warkleigh in 1892. Died 1 July 1916 aged 24.

W. HEALE
Private William Heale of the 8th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Annie Heale. Born in 1888  in Winkleigh - grew up in Ashreigney.  Died 1 Jul 1916 aged 28.
S. PARKER
Lance Corporal Sydney Parker of the 1st Battalion, the Queen's Own (Royal West Kent) Regiment. Son of  Parker of Lute House, Chapple, Winkleigh and husband of Elsie Norah Parker of Riddlecombe, Ashreigney. Died 26 October 1917 aged 21.
S. PARKHOUSE
Private Sidney Parkhouse of the 18th Battalion, the Middlesex Regiment. Son of Robert and Ellen Parkhouse and brother of John (see below). Born in Ashreigney in 1888. Died 13 April 1918 aged 31.
J. PARKHOUSE
Private John Parkhouse of the Royal North Devon Hussars. Son of Robert and Ellen Parkhouse and brother of Sidney (see above). Born in Ashreigney in the December Quarter of 1894. Died 10 November 1915 aged 21. (A third brother from this family - George - served in the Royal Navy and survived the War.)
A. W. WEBBER
Private Walter Webber of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Lydia Webber. Born in Ashreigney. Died 16 August 1917 aged 23.
