Son of George and Minnie Glanfield of West Lake, Belstone. Born in Belstone in 1904. Died 24 November 1941 aged 38. |

Lieutenant Richard John Owen O'Neill-Roe of the Royal Navy, HMS Merlin ( a land-based naval airfield). Son of Lt-Col. Charles Douglas Roe DSO; OBE and his wife Blanche of Mowhay, Belstone; husband of Nancy O'Neill-Roe of Biggleswade, Bedfordshire. Born in Lahore, India 3 January 1918. Died 26 June 1942 aged 24.
Lieut. Roe was killed, as was another members of his crew, while piloting a plane over Starngford Loch, N. Ireland, doing running-up trials before joining HMS Illustrious. His body was not recovered ; the wreckage of the plane ( a Fairey) was found but the widow did not want it disturbed and it is now a designated war grave. |
